Detective Angel Roman of the Montclair Police Department provides this account of a crime and arrest made yesterday, January 15:
Robbery:
On 01/15/2013, at 0756 hours, officers were dispatched to the area of Bloomfield Avenue and Elm Street on a report of an armed robbery possibly with a handgun. The victim flagged down a passerby and had him call 911. The caller advised dispatch that the actors had threatened to shoot the victim if she did not give them her iPhone. The actors took the phone and ran toward the bus stop at Bloomfield Avenue and Gates Avenue. The caller described the actors, as per the victim, as a black male wearing a blue puffy style jacket, black pants and a purple skull cap and a black female wearing a pink hooded sweatshirt and black jeans.Officers arriving near the bus stop observed a New Jersey transit bus stopped at the intersection. They conducted a stop of the bus and as they boarded observed two subjects matching the descriptions seated in the last row of seats on the right side of the bus. They were immediately searched for weapons but none were located. The iPhone, which was described as having a Marilyn Monroe phone cover, was located underneath the seat in front of where the two were sitting.
Nineteen year old Kyle Carmichael of Newark and the female juvenile actor were placed under arrest without incident. The victim informed officers on scene that she was walking westbound on Bloomfield Avenue from Pine Street when the two actors approached her. The male had his hand in his waistband and threatened to shoot her if she did not hand over the phone which she did. He then told the female actor to pop her. Both then fled west toward Elm Street on Bloomfield Avenue. Kyle Carmichael was charged with Robbery, Terroristic Threats to kill and employing a juvenile in the commission of a crime. The juvenile was charged as accordingly.

Is anybody else annoyed that the police use the word “actor”
No
@fedup: Well, wait ’till everybody else gets home. You’re the first to answer my question.
Are you going to run a poll? Who really cares
What else would you like the “actors” referred to as?
Theater goers.
Keepin’ it classy and ghetto-fabulous, Montclair.
Two actors is wrong-it’s actor and actress, in this case. Or…the alleged George Clooney and Meryl Streep.
actors = more dramatic
‘Actors’ annoys me too. Am I watching a play? Residents of a northeastern suburban town go about their daily lives amid stabbings and robberies that belie the image of their upscale existence.
I’m more annoyed that these types of crimes are going on in town. That area of town is an abomination and should be cleaned up. Criminals shouldn’t feel comfortable coming into Monclair. But if they do come here, they definitely shouldn’t feel comfortable enough to pull these types of shenanigans in town.
in response to sarah: crime is happening beyond that area of town…the two murders that happened in town in the past six months didn’t happen in that area of town, they both happened close to valley road and within two blocks of each other, near Nauna’s. And the stabbing that took place a few weeks ago happened on Normal Avenue in Upper Montclair. That said, I agree with your comment.
They commit armed robbery and their getaway vehicle is a NJ Transit bus ? These “actors” need a better script !
I wonder what on earth a “possible gun” is.
Sarah’s reference to a part of Montclair as an “abomination”, however, is far more unfortunate, both as phrasing and as condescending social judgment.
In response to Sarah: I don’t think criminals come to Montclair because they can get away with crime here, i mean you are commenting on an article where the individuals involved did not get away with a crime. I’m pretty sure these “actors” would have committed this crime just about anywhere, that’s what criminals do.
I read it as, “possibly with a handgun.”
The cop maybe didn’t know how to spell “alleged perpetrators?” I thought they taught that phraseology in Cop School.
cathar, get over yourself. Everyone knows “that part of town” is both the toilet and laughing stock of Montclair.
“Person of interest” has replaced “suspect” in police reporting as well.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if “suspect” violates the presumption of innocence in our criminal justice system.
Evwen using the phrase “that part of town,” redrum, marks you as a lout. And quite possibly a lout with a distinctly racialist worldview.
Would you buy a house down there, cathar? Le your kids play in the streets?
Nope, didn’t think so.
