Baristanet posts a lot of lost pet stories, so it’s great to hear what happens. A reader writes…
I’m happy to report that our found cat story has a very happy ending…
We brought the cat to the vet and had it checked for an ID chip – which it did have. Her name is Duchess, reported lost from Bloomfield 6 months ago. The vet left a message for her owners, and said that if they didn’t respond within 10 days, we could keep her. We waited with bated breath, since we had already gotten very attached to this little (10 pound) ball of fur.
We got the news yesterday that her original owners, who have moved to Connecticut, have already adopted a new cat. They were happy to hear that Duchess has found a good home, and agreed to let us keep her. Duchess, now “Furgie”, is happy here with us and our two other rescue cats.

Great news- good luck Furgie!
It sounds like these people abandoned “Furgie”
We have the same situation in our neighborhood. A neighbor moved leaving the female cat here. She has survived about 5 years now. She has had kittens at least twice that we know of. We feed her, but she bolts away if we try to come near her. I worry so much when the weather is cold or in the summer when the temperatures reach 90 degrees or above.
But she has somehow survived. We hope she does have a home and is an inside/outside cat.
The cat I just wrote about is a beautiful all white cat. If anyone in the area of Sunset Ave. in the Bloomfield/Glen Ridge/Montclair Area owns this cat please let me know.
If the original owners were so indifferent about getting Furgie back, I am very sorry that they have another cat. I’m so glad Furgie is the winner here.
If I lost my cat I would never give up hope in finding her; and even if I already adopted a new cat, I would take my cat back; These people are NOT good people owners at all. Bless the people who found her and now are giving her a home……..
with small grey eyebrows?
If that’s her we’ve named her Blanca (we have her sister who we trapped neutered and adopted – White Fang) and want to trap and neuter her. She shows up here for breakfast and dinner and now sits on the stairs when I’m on the porch- the last set of kittens lived under our porch for a while.
Bloomfield TNR has refused to help – I now have a trap and will start setting it out but can’t afford to take a day off of work to take her to People For Animals to be neutered…
@pat gilleran, I thought that there were only two of these white cats, the mother and kitten, plus the tabby kitten. We were going to call mother Enola, but Blanca is nice. We figured that she was staying under someone’s porch, but didn’t know where. I was speaking to a friend who volunteers at the West Orange shelter about borrowing a trap to neuter and release back into the neighborhood where at least she knows where to get food, but, Blanca doesn’t show up at our place every day, and I didn’t want to trap one that belongs to somebody. I haven’t spotted the kittens in months.

To Pat Gilleran: That’s her! She shows up here mid-morning or late afternoon but runs away when I walk out onto our porch. I guess she gets enough to eat between us. We’ll take her to People for Animals if you can trap her. I’m paranoid about putting my personal info. on the web since we had an identity theft incident not too long ago. How can we arrange to meet? At the next town council or BOH meeting? LOL
@patgilleran: You can contact me at “javaman”
Cuddles, I’m with you. I can’t imagine what I would do if I ever lost one of my critters. To just let her go makes me sick. Furgie found her forever home. Her first family clearly wasn’t it.
I’ll be at the Bloomfield town council meeting tomorrow night 1/8/13 talking about the need for an RFP for the animal services that the Bloomfield Health department wants to award the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Network without bidding it out as required by the state of NJ.
Or you can stop by my house – white house on the north side of sunset where Essex t-s in. Chairlift on the front stairs and a car always in the driveway (my husband isn’t driving yet since his amputation). I’m not around much during the week- but am on the weekend.
I haven’t seen the kittens in a while or the dad (we called him Max and the little (one black on grey or grey on black)- we called Maxie-it’s been about 2 months since we’ve seen either of them. Max would come up on the porch while my husband was sitting there in his wheelchair and wait for him to put down food. He was quite friendly and we hope that someone took him in or that he’s an indoor/outdoor.
When you stop by I can show you White Fang- she’s lovely and looks just like Blanca except she’s very healthy looking- she’s still shy but comes up and asks to cuddle on my shoulder when I’m on the computer and rubs her head against my face. I was able to train her to come when I called and she let me pick her up before we trapped her and brought her in.
I look forward to meeting you!
I am so happy that together we can help Blanca. And I can’t wait to see White Fang. The next evening that our son is not working we’ll walk up the street and introduce ourselves formally. Blanca showed up around 3:00 pm today but I told her she would spoil her appetite for dinner and didn’t give her any more food! Anxious to meet you.
ah frobnitz- go ahead andfeed her I don’t have the trap out yet- we’re going to have to figure out where to put her that’s warm for 48 hrs after surgery!
I was just kidding about not feeding her! I did put more food out. Let’s talk about where we can keep her after the surgery when we meet. We’ll be up to see you soon.
