Montclair Students For Stop Sign At Chestnut And Forest

Students from Montclair Cooperative School–for the second time in a month– have called on Township Council members to place a stop sign at the busy intersection of Chestnut and Forest Streets.

It’s the same intersection where a pedestrian was struck and sent to the hospital last Thursday with a foot injury.

At a 2nd Ward Community meeting last night, and at a town council meeting on December 11th, students advocated for installing stop signs near their school.

Last fall, the school’s 7th and 8th graders organized a letter campaign calling for signage at the location, which is also near Montclair High School and Renaissance Middle School.

Township Engineer Kimberli Craft is conducting a traffic survey on the intersection and the results will be discussed at tonight’s town council meeting, said Township Manage Marc Dashield.

I was in Millburn the other day and saw one of these:http://www.tapconet.com/solar-led-division/flashing-led-stop-sign-blinkerstop.

It is a led blinking stop sign with a small solar panel. There was no way you could miss this thing even if you were speeding in a snowstorm.

This is the stop sign we need at this intersection!

I’ve seen a sign like this in Little Falls. Not sure of the names of the intersecting streets but next time I’m there, I’ll make a note. Very hard to miss,I agree.

I thought the issue was sight lines with the crest of the hill on chestnut st and vehicles speeding, not vehicles running the stop sign on Forest st. So what benefit would these signs be if the visibility of the sign is not the issue?

Are you anti-children, fedup? Is that what you’re getting at?

Ah Roo, you’re such a little troublemaker!

The problem is, people are already anticipating that IF we put in a 4-way stop, the Boneheaded drivers around these parts will simply run the signs on Chestnut because they are either blithely oblivious or wilfullly evil and/or stupid, I haven’t quite decided which yet. And honestly, until people learn how to actually navigate a 4-way stop (YES You have to Take Turns and Stop at the limit line, not draft off the guy ahead of you!!) this intersection would also require some actual Enforcement!!

I think there is a flashing stop sign on Clove Road where it meets Long Hill Road, over by Montclair State. Very effective.

Kay, I think when a new stop sign is placed where there wasn’t one it takes some of us a while to get used to it, and the flashing sign will help.

I’m a pretty good driver and hopefully not blithely oblivious, wilfullly evil or stupid, but right after they installed the new stop sign at Chestnut and North Fullerton I’m sad to say I blew through it a couple times. I knew it had been installed, but my brain just didn’t register at first.

Yes, Kay, the New Jersey driver needs to be educated. Vermont is full of 4-way stop signs and I’ve never once had a problem navigating them. And yes, people actually stop for pedestrians there!

SSP, you get a pass! just don’t let it happen again ;)

There are more people crammed into Essex Co. than in the entire state of Vermont. It’s like comparing first class to coach.

FWIW some guy who was drafting yesterday at the North Fullerton 4-way after school played chicken with my daughter. I mean, Really.

I say give me the danged ticket book and I will stand there and write tickets for running the sign, then maybe people will learn!

I would happily accept a ticket from you, Kay.

Kay your posts on the errant NJ drivers are always fun to read and right on target. Have you considered changing your profession?

Funny, PAZ. I’m high on stress.

Stress is what keeps us from attaining Nirvana. It’s obviously caused by the ruling elite to keep us Proles on our toes and eyes off the prize.

JG….I sometimes feel we are being compressioned rather than compassioned.

Hi Ms Dag, long time no-see! Yes, many times I have thought I am definitely in the wrong line of work!

And if I were independently wealthy, I have a list of Things I Would Do Instead:
    (1) Hold babies in the maternity ward since they always seem short-handed
    (2) Play with the animals at the shelter
    (3) Visit various township and county engineers about all the traffic improvements that are desperately needed, including missing street signs, directional markings, and signal timing
    (4) Prowl the streets of Montclair with my Citizen Ticket book, thus reminding people of certain traffic, parking and other common-sense rules!
    :)

They tried an interesting experiment in Boston with four-way stop signs: it lasted very briefly until the second person figured out that if the other three drivers approaching the signs all had to stop, he could run the intersection at will.

Glad to hear there was a grant. It was an insane amount of $ that was proposed to come out of town coffers. Good job, BID!
