Cute As A Kitten

These felines are calling "take me home!" Danny Heaps, owner of Iggy's Place - a pet store in Montclair - is letting some kittens who were down on their luck catnap at the store until they are adopted.

The 5 Mouseketeers: 5 siblings (4 girls and 1 boy) found on a front porch in Jersey City. They are about 10 weeks old and are cuter than you can imagine, says Heaps. "We are trying to find them homes in pairs! All are in great health and well trained."

He also has a six-month-old female long hair, and a five-year-old Siamese; see them, after the jump.

Grow Your Own

How green does your garden grow? Create your own farmer's market at home... Pat Kenschaft, Baristaville's garden queen, tipped us off about today's organic garden tour:

Saturday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Cornucopia Network of New Jersey will host an Open Garden tour of organic vegetable gardens. Mine at 56 Gordonhurst Ave. will be the host garden with displays in the front yard, providing congenial interesting conversations.

I have raised almost all my family’s vegetables for decades. Over the past year I have harvested over 50 edibles in my back yard, including some fruit. I will provide half-hour continuing tours, or you can wander alone if you walk only on the green grass.

Several other open gardens are in easy walking distance of 56 Gordonhurst Ave...

An Outlaw Visits The Outpost

Outpost in the 'Burbs begins their Fall '08 season with a performance on Friday, Sept 5 by singer/songwriter Steve Earle, who is touring to promote his Grammy-winning "Washington Square Serenade." He'll share the stage that night with his wife, singer Allison Moorer.

Earle has long been celebrated (and occasionally vilified) for his edgy blend of country and folk music. He's done enough personal struggling (jail time included) to sing the blues with unmistakable authenticity, and his stuff is never dull -- odds are this show won't be either. Tix went on sale last week (grab some while you can at Keil's, Ticketweb or by snail mail -- details here) and the Outpost crew is gearing up for Earle's visit: "We are delighted to kick off Outpost's upcoming season here in Montclair with Grammy-winning alt-country artist Steve Earle, who will be supported by his wife, Allison Moorer," Outpost producer Rob Rinderman tells us. Additional Outpost shows for the '08-'09 season will be announced soon.

Murky Bush Memorial?

With Dubya's imminent White House departure, plans are surely in the works to commemorate his two-term tenure. We've already heard about the Bushmobile, and many presidents get libraries named after them. But California residents will vote to approve another kind of memorial - undoubtedly the first of its kind. File under "Weird News:" From Kansas City.com:

A measure seeking to commemorate President Bush's years in office by slapping his name on a San Francisco sewage plant has qualified for the November ballot.

The measure certified Thursday would rename the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

Supporters say the idea is to commemorate the mess they claim Bush has left behind by actions such as the war in Iraq.

Local Republicans say the plan stinks and they will oppose it.

Hmmm, any ideas for a memorial to NJ Politicians, like Sharpe James?

Baristaville Blackouts Continue

A tipster writes: What's with all the blackouts?

Once again, the Tuers Park area of Upper Montclair is experiencing blackouts. There was one overnight and short blackouts followed by power surges this morning. PSEG trucks have been spotted roving. Is it my imagination or have there been an inordinate amount of blackouts in this section this year?

Time to Go?

With taxes in many NJ towns reaching a tipping point, many voices can be heard on local forums declaring that the time has come to set sail and move on...but where to? If you live in Montclair, it might be Bloomfield.

But Bloomfielders just got their 11% (estimated) hike and are ready to move further from NY. Folks in Maplewood have been engaged in a marathon web discussion on the viablity of mobility in this economy. Ten days later, the thread has evolved into a discussion of what could be cut to keep residents in place.

Be warned: Unlike in Baristaville, the folks to the south of us tend to express their thoughts in complete paragraphs, rather than zingers.

More Baby Blues At Home Depot

What the #@$%? During summer months we usually hear about pets abandoned by their vacationing owners...but babies? For the second time this week, a Home Depot store has been used as a baby depot. Tuesday, a toddler was found in the hot seat at HD Clifton, yesterday afternoon a tipster reports baby #2, only months old, was left behind at HD in Totowa:

Just came from the HD in Totowa - another abandoned baby was brought to the courtesy desk while I was transacting a return. Totowa police were on the scene.

Update: The Totowa store tipster tells us more:

I approached the customer service counter around 4:45-5:00 while another couple (in their 30s) was arguing with the counter reps. The discussion centered around whose responsibility it was to deal an infant who was sitting on the counter in a car seat. I also heard them say something about the heat in the parking lot. It seemed that the couple had already alerted another HD employee about the baby, though that employee hadn't (in their minds) taken appropriate action - thus the argument. The male shopper was pretty angry, and was cursing at the store clerks. The couple left the infant there on the counter and advised customer service to call child services or the police.

It's time again for another edition of Cafe Theatre, the collection of short plays produced locally several times a year by Summit impresario Dave Hoffman. This summer's production, again upstairs at Tierney, includes seven shorts, including "The Funeral Parlor" by Christopher Durang. The show runs Thursday through Saturday, 7:30 pm, this weekend and next. Coffee and sweets are available for purchase.

To celebrate Cafe Theatre's return to Montclair, Hoffman is giving away four free tickets this weekend to the first person who can tell us who played the original roles of the visiting mourner and the widow in first production of Durang's "The Funeral Parlor." Now, we learn from Serge the Concierge that host families are desperately needed:

There are trip dates set for August 2008 for over 200 children and they need host families to volunteer to host these inner-city children.

Unless all prospective host families are screened and vetted by the end of July these 200 children may miss out on an invaluable experience

One last thing that is actually very important. The Fresh Air Fund is looking for families who want to extend an invitation to a 9-12 year old. We really need more families who want older children and boys.

Interested host families can contact (angie@freshair.org) immediately or call the Fresh Air Fund at 1-800-367-0003 (212.897.8900) and ask for Angie. If you've ever participated in the Fresh Air Fund, tell us about your experience in comments.
