Bradford Kids Learn How Breakfast Helps Their Day

Monday, December 21, 2009

breakfast.bradford.jpgA hearty lesson on the importance of rolling off the day with a wholesome breakfast greeted kids at Bradford Elementary one day last week. Z100's popular DJ Skeery Jones and Aunt Jemima, the maker of pancake mixes and frozen breakfasts, partnered with the school and Montclair nutritionist Jodi Godfrey, to explain how a nutritious breakfast could lead to a gold star on the next test, and the ability to concentrate better in general.

At the event, part of a Breakfast Education program in Montclair, Godfrey asked the kids at Bradford to stand up if they felt breakfast was the most important meal of the day. She said out of 50 kids, only 3 remained seated (even as they looked unsure of themselves). She explained how a good breakfast gave them the fuel they needed for a successful day at school and engaged them in games, while discussing how nutritious choices such as fruit, yoghurt and milk were good for them. Godfrey said that when the kids lined up for the caterer, they filled their plates with fruit and granola, and told her they wouldn't have done that before, a point she thought was very encouraging.

Meanwhile, if you're clean out of breakfast ideas not involving cereal or toast, here are some recipes for breakfast muffins and oatmeal pancakes that you can put together with your kids (yes, from scratch!).

Isn't this this same site that has a weekly TAKE BACK THE KITCHEN column?

Aunt Jemima frozen pancakes- the very ones in the picture here- are exactly what a kids SHOULD NOT eat in the morning.

And really, pancake batter is about the easy thing to make, why you would even need the Aunt Jemima "just add water" mix is beyond me.

Between this crap and Lunchables, no wonder kids are as fat as they are.

This stuff is, simply: a subtle form of child abuse.

So while I enjoy poking fun at Alma Schneider, she is EXACTLY right: parents need to do more to realize how EASY cooking is and how important it is to get their kids to eat correctly.

Having Aunt Jemima sponsor a breakfast program (and don't get me started on the Z-100 DJ) is shameful.
