Everyone wants to be good to the environment (except for Kristen), and going green is on our minds especially around Earth Day. So I have been thinking of what to do with all the worksheets and random pages of scribbles 3-year-old Alan creates. We decided to turn them into placemats. You know, so he'll have something to eat his mud pie on (chocolate pudding).
We also wanted a centerpiece. So we decorated old formula cans and put inexpensive plants. Because we got hungry, we also made our mud pie.
Here's how we did this easy, fun craft.
Materials:
Cardboard (cereal boxes work well)
Scraps of artwork
Scrap paper, kids artwork, old preschool schoolwork
Elmer's Glue
Sponge or sponge paint brush
Recycled containers (yogurt or formula can)
Dirt
Seeds or plants (I bought an oregano plant at A&P for $2.)

- Cut cardboard to the size of a rectangular placemat. I rounded the edges for fun. I rounded the edges for fun.
- Gather all of the scribbles, artwork and scrap paper. Cut it into shapes--I like flowers.
- Put Elmer's glue in a bowl and add a little water.
- Using a sponge, coat the cardboard with glue paste.
- Arrange cut out shapes on the cardboard.
- A coat of glue on the top adds a good seal. The glue dries up clear.
- Paste more shapes onto the old containers.
- Put plants in there.
Mud Pie Treat
- Make chocolate pudding.
- Add crunched up Oreos for dirt.
- Pour into graham cracker crust.
- Decorate with Gummy worms.
