Drinking the Compost Kool-Aid

French breakfast radishes grown in compost

When I moved to my home here in Baristaville  almost three years ago, my backyard was a wasteland of weeds and trees surrounded by a chain-link fence. It was home to not one flower but only vagabond families of banjo pickin’ raccoons who would laugh and carry on tipping my garbage cans over every night, leaving a hilly-billy mess all over my driveway. During my quiet desperation to transform this mass of weeds into a garden, I found myself  listening to Mike McGrath on “You Bet Your Garden” while he explained that hauling away leaves to the curb was  like throwing away gold for your garden.

So basically I could save myself the back breaking work of bagging 8,000 leaves by creating a compost pile. Where do I sign? This was my kind of Kool-Aid. Continue Reading

According to the Montclair Times, it turns out rocker Earl Slick was in the vintage car that was destroyed by fire, after performing in a School of Rock tribute show called “The British Invasion” at Just Jake’s in Montclair.  Luckily, no was was hurt.

Plofker Co. Buys Montclair’s Former Luna Stage Prop

BY ,  |  Wednesday, May 23, 2012 11:21am  |  COMMENTS (6)

A company developer that Steve Plofker is involved with has bought the former Luna Stage building at 695 Bloomfield Ave in Montclair. Plofker tells Baristanet that the plan is to renovate the building and transform it into a contemporary retail and office space. The office space (which will be located upstairs) is in demand, says Plofker, because he doesn’t have a single vacancy for office space in his other properties. No word yet on what the downstairs retail space might house, but Plofker expects it will be another ratable for the town.

Africk: Council is Glib About Spending $6M

BY  |  Wednesday, May 23, 2012 9:06am  |  COMMENTS (10)

Editor’s Note: Baristanet has corrected the final paragraph of this blog post to reflect the fact that Bob Russo is no longer president of the adjunct professors’ local union at Montclair State University. He was replaced two months ago by Bob Noonan.

As this Council nears the end of its term, some members are determined to push as much through as possible.  Both spending, and pet projects such as the “Bike Storage Locker” proposal that the Mayor has been kicking around for years.  Under that proposal developers would be required to set aside space — sometimes substantial space — for the storage of bicycles.  Locked storage of bicycles.  Although no one has asked the developers about the impact such an ordinance would have on them.

Then there’s the spending.  Most of it could have waited the five weeks for the new Council.  The spending is significant.  Tonight, over SIX MILLION DOLLARS of new capital spending was approved!  Some towns agonize over spending $20,000.  Montclair glibly agrees to six million.

But what some people find infuriating is the inability of “management” to account for where all that money is going!  Purchases are lumped together.  Descriptions and totals vary depending on the report.  And when some citizen seeks an explanation, like Sandy Sorkin did tonight, they are mocked and ridiculed.

Council Murnick did a terrific job of questioning the manager.  He also led a discussion into the proposal, from the Manager, that gave increases to the 20 or so employees of the township (out of four hundred) who are the only ones that aren’t covered by union contracts.  The manager’s justification was two-fold:  a) let’s put together a “merit” program for people not covered under the union contract, or if not, b) it’s been “tradition” to give these people increases equivalent to that of the union, even though we don’t have to so let’s do it.  Mind you, some of those people are the highest paid in the Township.

Union contracts are just that, contracts.  They provide for increases over the years, as well as changes in benefits and work rules.  They apply to everyone in the union.

Employees not under union rules, do not get that “benefit.”

Hopefully, this next Council will bring a measure of accountability to Township affairs, and we’ll be able to track spending.

And to the biggest chunk of our expenses — union payrolls — hopefully this new Council with two union presidents one union president among its membership will be able to help us negotiate a mutually rewarding contractual arrangement.

Poll: How Will You Spend Memorial Day Weekend?

BY  |  Wednesday, May 23, 2012 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (6)

The holiday weekend is fast approaching, and Baristanet is wondering how readers plan to mark the occasion.

Monday will bring the time-honored tradition of parades.  We wrote about Bloomfield’s here last week. Glen Ridge has a traditional Memorial Day Parade that starts down Ridgewood Avenue at 11 a.m., followed by a Service of Remembrance at the Ridgewood Avenue School and then a festive town picnic. For details, click here.

Maplewood has a big parade as well as a famed Rubber Duck Race, where people “sponsor” rubber ducks that are dumped in the river in a slow float toward the finish line. Continue Reading

Council Passes Budget, with Applause and Relief

The Montclair Township Council

The outgoing 2008-12 Montclair Township Council passed a budget last night without any of the drama or special meetings for a vote that marred the process in 2011. The passage of the budget, with expenditures of over $74.9 million, was met with applause and relief by the very council  that passed it.

Fourth Ward Councilor Renée Baskerville managed to amend the budget slightly before the final vote, successfully getting the council to agree to adding spending for the Summer Youth Employment Initiative through the township’s recreation department.

The amendment, which passed with First Ward Councilor Rich Murnick, Second Ward Councilor Cary Africk, and Mayor Jerry Fried voting against it, sets aside $15,500 for the recreation department for twenty summer jobs for teenagers to be hired through the Montclair Neighborhood Development Corporation (MNDC) to work in public works jobs and helping senior citizens, among other things, plus a partnership with Montclair Emergency Services for the Homeless to participate in gardening activities. MNDC is to administer the program, with the township keeping watch over it. Continue Reading

Friends of Wildwoods Speak for the Trees

BY  |  Tuesday, May 22, 2012 3:45pm  |  COMMENTS (5)

Friends of Wildwoods have a new mascot for their campaign to save and restore the 2.5 acres of vacant property off of Brookdale Park.

They couldn’t have found a more fitting one than the Lorax, Dr. Seuss’ little orange creature who “speaks for the trees” and appears on a sign posted on Watchung Avenue, and on signs posted at the Wildwood property.

Roger Paradiso, spokesman for Friends of Wildwoods, sent Baristanet a statement today:

The friends of Wildwood are determined to preserve this open space and will do what we can to prevent this and any other council from destroying valuable open space.  Any actions by this council will be met with the appropriate reaction.  It is regrettable that this council is making citizens choose open space or affordable housing when they should both exist in harmony.  In a town with precious little open space left for our children it will be a crime to lose Wildwood to development when there are many affordable housing options available in the current real estate market.

Several montclair residents, including local environmentalist Pat Kenschaft, have been outspoken supporters of keeping Wildwood green, but in February the council voted “yes” to building affordable housing on the two vacant lots owned by the Township. The deadline for the Wildwood RFP was today at 3 p.m.

I'll be visiting two cemeteries to pay tribute to two men with whom I served in Nam, and I'm really surprised the Baristas didn't include such a visitation as something specific to do this coming weekend. Since such remembrance is traditionally the true purpose of Memorial (or "Decoration") Day.
