This is home away from home. Delicious coffee and chai, generous portions, yummy omelettes, staff that remembers how you like your food, people from the neighborhoos... There's not a week that goes by that I'm not there at least once.

do yourself a favor and eat at the bluestone. they have great food, pushing the limits between great and perfect. and somehow they manage to serve these killer dishes mere minutes after you order them. and i have been there four times - every time i was totally satisfied. i ordered, opened my phone to play some solitare and the food was there before the game was close to being finished. however, sometimes it may be a little cramped, but just deal with it. u deal with it everywhere else in montclair, don't u? and for lesser food!

Ugh. This place is a great local coffee shop. And yes, the chai is amazing. I love coming on Tuesdays and overhearing book groups talk about their latest read! So why Ugh? Because as much as it is a great hang-out, I don't go there for lunch anymore. Too many times I have had a waiter who acts as if it was a major inconvienience for me to be asking for food or water! Also, the last two sandwiches which I had ordered that have come out of the kitchen were not up to par. If tomatoes are in season, why can't they use them? Suggestion: stick to the specials on the board.
The breakfast is great, and so is the coffee so make sure your book meeting is in the morning!

and Bluestone will be operating the cafe that is at the Montclair Library on South Fullerton - date not sure, yet...
a great idea!

Sometimes spotty service. Very strict rules about what can be ordered at what times. If you go in 1/2 hour before closing, expect an eye roll from the person greeting you. Bottom line, though: Excellent coffee & excellent and creative food.

I love Blue Stone! Their coffee is wickedly strong, and the food is just yummy! For breakfast, I like the egg burrito. For lunch, their sandwiches are really delicious. Yes, sometimes the service is spotty. And I think that has to do with having one or two servers on the floor. The only gripe I have about this place is the rare occasion when I get sat near the bathroom.

Ah, Blue Stone! What a delight to the senses: taste, smell, sight and touch. A lapis lazuli cavern of gustatorial delights, worthy of praise by the Mevlana!

Oft have I thought I've sighted Al-Khidr, the guide of souls, there - smiliing and winking at me from behind the great grinder!

I've eaten here twice - both times there was hair in my food. I won't be going back.

Bluestone makes me wonder how it stays in business and the restaurant scene in Montclair in general:

Went yesterday for breakfast and was saddened by the lack of food quality.
Breakfast potatoes that were clearly bruised and soft, had no flavor AND were cold. Eggs were runny and the toast was barely toasted.

Not an ounce of detail that ultimately makes for a poor meal.

The menu that has little, if any, pizazz which isn't a terrible thing, but they don't even do the basics very well.

What's worse is when ordering a glass of water it's served in a plastic cup...one of those small cheap, really flexy cups that you think is going to erupt.

C'mon...is it that difficult to serve a decent breakfast with just a little creativity and quality?

We're not looking for a 5-star restaurant but why does it seem the community accepts such shoddy food?
And why would a restaurant in this upscale community think it's alright to
serve a glass of water in a dixie cup?

It's such a bummer that this place doesn't feel the need to provide a better experience through even decent food. And would it be so bad if the bathroom were just a little clean?

I'll never go back.

I have happily moved from Montclair--where the people have been getting a bit too Wendy-like for my tastes. Poor upscale community has to drink from plastic cups? Heavens, no!

The Bluestone is one of the few things that I miss about Montclair. The coffee is to die for, the staff is made up of lovely, genuine people, and I would travel across state lines for one of its breakfasts...or even, the delectable gorgonzola and brocoli rabe sandwich (or wait, maybe the brie and shallots instead).

I have an idea for the perfect community service project for the "Wendys" of Montclair. Maybe you can all get your wonderful upscale selves together and have a restaurant bathroom cleaning contest. (But maybe you should send your maids on vacation to practice first) Just think, it will be like the Peace Corps! And they might even give you some water out of a plastic cup!!!!!!!!

We use to be regulars at Bluestone, but they did something not long ago, that I can never forgive.

A few months ago, I went in to Bluestone with my soon to be giving birth (8 1/2 months) pregnant wife, to have a relaxing lunch and conversation about out so to come good fortune.

When walked throuh the door, we where politely greeted and escorted to a table for 2 next to the coffee roaster. It became clear very quickly that my wife did not fit in there and was quite uncomfortable. We looked around and noticed 3 tables for 4 open, so we chose the one in the back that afforded my wife the most room and comfort. The waitress came over to us and said that we had to go back to the other table because we were only two and this table was for 4 . After calmly trying to make a sympetheic case for my wife, she told us that there was nothing that she could do, it was policy.

I asked to speak to the manager and was curtly told that she was right behind the counter and I was welcome to talk to her myself. I went up to the counter politely, surely the manager would understand and be sympethetic, but she turned out to be worse. She kept insisting that she needed to keep the table open in case a group of 4 came in. When I pointed out that there were 3 tables of 4 available she walked away to help someone else.

Rather than making a scene in front of other customers,
I took my wife out of there and we walked over to Bonjour Montclair (where I had never gone before).

We were greeted warmly and taken care of by the staff in a way that you would expect from every establishmnet (except Bluestone of course).

We have never been back to Bluestone since and will never go back there again.

Bluestone clearly does not understand the business lesson that a happy customer may share there experience with only a few people, but an unhappy one will share their experience with everyone!

Now at least they will.

FYI 2 weeks later my wife gave birth to a healthy boy!

Bluestone isn't bad, but it's not amazing either. I went there thinking that given the crowds, it must be fantastic. While it's decent, it's not amazing. The coffee is ok. The food was fine, I suppose it's a bit better than Friendly's (not that it's THAT much better), but places like this are found on every block around the city. I certainly wouldn't dream of taking friends here to impress them. Try harder next time, folks.

Bluestone is such a disappointment for us because the food is so bland and...average. It's not horrible but certainly nothing remotely close to fresh and/or contemporary.

The bathroom is beyond filthy. It's disgusting.

And would it be so terrible to serve water in something besides a lame, flimsy plastic cup that holds 2 ounces?

C'mon...is it that expensive to buy some
hard plastic tumblers?

We feel this place misses lots of the details and could be lots better.

I think the owners are really tired and
take the easiest route.

We eat there usually once a week and we love it. Great service every time, consistently good food (both things are really important to me) and I love the coffee. There's just something I like about the atmosphere there. FYI-the earlier you go on a Sunday the better. The place fill up quick!

I, too eat at Bluestone about once a week. I love the fact that it's NOT trendy or "impressive". It's a friendly neighborhood restaurant that serves a wonderfully dependable breakfast that's waaaaay beyond Friendly's food! Their eggs are done to perfection, their whole grain bread is a wonderful change from the usual, their coffee is good, strong (& not burnt tasting) While their home fries are, admitedly bland, they allow you to substitute fresh fruit. It's friendly & warm &, yes, crowded at certain times, befitting a popular neighborhood cafe.

For those needing to "impress", the new Uptown has opened. While it doesn't convey that homey, neighborhood-y feel, it's more impressive to the eye and will serve that need well I think.

We tried Bluestone for the first time this past weekend. As anticipated for a Sunday brunch, there was a bit of a wait, but it went pretty quickly. I had the granola with yogurt and fresh fruit and found it to be a pretty hearty portion. Not sure if the granola was home made or not. Since it didn?t specify, I?ll assume not. Boyfriend had the breakfast burrito served with potatoes, which was pleasant, but nothing out of the ordinary. We would go back again, but my preference for brunch would still be Bonjour Montclair or Raymond?s.
