Don't go in expecting to buy cheese for wine pairings. More sandwich/bagel stop than cheese shop, this Valley road stop, has won accolades for its tuna salad.

Not only that but I needed to take out a second mortgage for two sandwiches and a soda.
lol new to the area, just saw this place. Are there any good cheese shops in town (even this Whole foods has a less then stellar selection)
sandwiches are terrific, never had a bad one yet. The furniture is not kid friendly unfortunately.

the place is so unfriendly! never receive a 'hello' or 'thanks'. and the
atmosphere is so unlively. just not for me.
this is the cheese shop with no cheese. Hilarious! I agree with the lack of friendly service and how the place has no pizazz. Too bad because I live close and would visit often.
I agree that the service is not friendly here. Its like your doing them a favor by buying a sandwich. And the place has such a dead feel.
yeah i also agree about the lack of cheese in a CHEESE SHOP. But I managed to accomadate my craving for great cheese on tuesday when i went to Joe Bartonis across from naunas. I didnt think they would have cheese for sale outside of the deli counter but to my suprise they had a whole fridge devoted to cheese with every kind you can think of. I am soo happy now. And I just wanted to let others know where to find quaility cheeses
Sandwiches are good and I think for what you get reasonably priced.
Coffee is also very good.
On the new Montclair delivery site myofo.com, which allows montclair restaurants to post online menus and have online orders, they have a restaurant called "Sandwich Theory" which occupies the same address as the Cheese Shop, and has a similar menu. Did the cheese shop change hands? Did they just change the name?
The Cheese Shop is now officially Sandwich Theory. The ownership did not change, just the name.
Lets hope a new name brings a new approach with friendlier service and cleanliness. Stopped in here last week for coffee and was GROSSED OUT by the filthy floor. I mean the tiles were caked with dirt that had not been cleaned in ages. And I agree with the above: the counter staff does not enjoy
saying 'hello' or 'thank you'. I try not to give Starbucks all my coffee money but this place doesn't deserve any of it.
I'm glad they took down the picture of the mouse in the front window. I alway thought it looked like it was doing something unsavory to the swiss cheese.
Have to say the reviews here are accurate...
Went into this shop and also noticed
the filthy floor. It clearly has not
been cleaned in years. Just disgusting.
This blog serves a valuable service and I appreciate the reviews.
And whatever this place is named should
gut their floor and start over because
the dirt is sooooo thick it can never be cleaned properly.
Went here for a quick lunch and thought it was fair. Prices are high for such basic food. And yes, the restaurant
is very dirty. Was planning to eat in but saw all the dirt and decided to eat in the nearby park, which seemed to be cleaner.
i once asked for extra cheese on my sandwich..i offered to pay for it ... still had to search for it in the sandwhich..used to be nice many years ago.
i won't go back..unfriendly and cheese-cheap.
i think most in town have realized this place has seen better days. Yes, it's overpriced, yes it's filthy and I agree
the people aren't the friendliest. I've spoken to the owner who gives you
the empty stare...and nothing ever changes for the better.
My family is done with this place.
Want great cheese....go to Joe bartonis, on valley road, across from Naunas
The above posts are funny, but true.
It's hard to miss the intense dirt on the floor as you walk in the shop. They
either never clean the floor or use dirty water and a dirty mop because it's been there for awhile.
Sandwich was fair, nothing to rave about, particularly when its a premium price.
Could be so much better, and cleaner.
so what is the sandwich theory?
change the name and people will pay more?
Different name but still the same overpriced, filthy store. I stopped going months ago when it was clear the
team working there had no interest in
being polite or nice.
All the posts here about their dirty floor is correct. I won't allow my kids near this place.
My daughter and I stopped here on Saturday for a quick lunch and feel
the place needs to be refreshed and thoroughly cleaned.
While waiting for our sandwich you can't
help but notice that dirt is everywhere.
Hanging from the lights, on the menu board, walls, etc. And the floor is
so dirty that you don't want to eat in the restaurant. It kind of gave us the creeps.
I'm surprised the health inspector gives
them a passing grade.
Salads are grossly overpriced. I paid more than $6 for a garden salad - no meat! Guess the joke's on me, but I won't be going back to repeat it.
Is it just me, or does the "Cheese Shop" basically have almost no cheese? I was expecting Murray's Cheese Shopt once and, well, it ain't Murray's. I asked to buy a half pound of cheddar cheese once and the high school girl at the counter gave me a look like I just asked her to slaughter a small cow with her bare hands. Maybe it's just me.
