Attracting folks from all over Baristaville, this small Southern-style fish fry is often packed. Fortunately, you can always grab deep-fried pleasure and go.

i don't know who these people are above me - wrong side of the bed waker uppers or wannabe worldchangers of the insane....whatever.
dude, when the word FISH FRY is right out there on the awning, EXPECT OIL! EXPECT FISH! AND FOR GOD'S SAKE, EXPECT ALL OF IT TO BE FRIED! if you don't go in for that sort of thing, STAY THE HELL AWAY! you go into a place that you know will upset you, then you get mad when it does? whoa....there are doctors for that.
i love the food here. only been there two times, but i was never disappointed by the food. however, they take their time and it is always too crowded. but when you get those delicious OIL-FRIED fish back home, it's all good. the only thing you need is TO LIKE OIL, FISH AND FRIED FOOD. if you don't, go somewhere else.
Crockett's has fresh fish, always; REAL scallops, and the potato salad is very good. The greens are not great but it certainly rounds out a meal. Bottom line: IT'S GOOD!!!!
I find it telling that poster "Michelle" above saw fit to tell us that she was "reprimanded" by an "african american" woman. What difference did it make that she was african american .... or was that your pathetic way of communicating to the bigots in the world that the clientelle of the restaurant are african america? Shame.
I USED TO WORK IN GLEN RIDGE AT THE HOWARD SAVINGS BANK. OUR V.P. USED TO GO TO CROCKETTS TO PICK UP LUNCH FOR THE WHOLE DEPARTMENT ON PAYDAYS. I MISS THE BANK AND MISS THE DAYS WE WOULD HAVE THEIR DELICIOUS FISH SANDWICHES, STACKED HIGH ON NICE FRESH WHITEBREAD. THEIR FOOD IS GREAT
I MISS THE DAYS OF THE HOWARD SAVINGS BANK ON HIGH STREET, WORKING IN THE CONSUMER CREDIT DEPT. AND ALL THE TRIPS TO CROCKETT'S OUR V.P. WOULD MAKE ON A FRIDAY TO GET LUNCH FOR ALL OF US. THE CATFISH IS OUT OF THIS WORLD. I AM NOW FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO WORK NEARBY IN BLOOMFIELD AND STILL MAKE TRIPS THERE FOR LUNCH. THEY ARE THE BEST.
I went there last night. Yes it was crowded (it was a Friday). In any case I ordered and waited patiently with everyone else and was not dissappointed! When I walked in, caught a whiff of that smell and heard the jazz music and ceiling fans whirling, I decided this is what makes Montclair so great! It is places like this that give you a REAL taste of why fish fry joints are so popular down south and in inner cities. I absolutely loved it! Fresh, authentic, tasty, and worth the wait. I also found the people working there to be friendly. Dont go if you are some insecure hung up Yuppie that will feel uncomfortable among hard working folks. Just go for the fish!
I moved to Arizona, and totally miss the fresh fish...flounder...sooo..to you ship..same day air to AZ?? If so, please let me know asap.
To say the least, the fish at Crocketts is fresh, yes its fried, but not fried to the point of tasting the oil and seeing it in your food. The family-based staff is more than friendly and accommodating. I bought along some friends from Central Jersey with me that never experienced Crocketts' fish and every single person had a different type of fish and each one absolutely enjoyed their food and praised it. So if you want fresh, tasty, non-greasy fried fish, GO TO CROCKETTS FISH FRY in Montclair. You will NEVER be disappointed.....I will be going there tonight!
Crocketts clearly has the best fried fish in essex county. The potato salad is the best I have ever had, that is worth the trip by itself.

I JUST STARTED GOING TO CROCKETTS AND WE ALL LOVE IT. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE SHRIMP. YES THE WAIT IS LONG BUT I CALL MY ORDER IN AT LEAST 25-30 MINUTES BEFORE TIME AND IT IS READY... HNDS DOWN BEST FISH AND SHRIMP I HAVE EVER TASTED!!!
This is THE BEST FISH fry place i have ever been to. The food is always fresh. Yes,it is always crowded but one taste and you will understand why. The fresh collard greens are outstanding too. It is worth the wait and worth anyone's while.
Hey Yal, I know Crockett's from its inception. (Born and raised in the Township). Use to be old southern owned and operated. Now it's a not so fast, fast food operation! Apparently, all of you have missed the great homestyle flavor of Bunny's Fish Fry and Seafood in Bloomfield. Open for 2 years, this little cafe on a quiet street near Watsessing Park grew out of the owner's love to serve good food because his family owned a diner in Montclair in the 50's.
Nothing against Crockett's but if you like fried fish with options like grilled salmon, gumbo, or just a garden salad...Bunny's is the place. Opened as a take out, you can eat in as well. Bunny's is located at 33 Carteret Street in Bloomfield, 973-680-4900 for information and directions. Off of Ridgewood Ave. in Glenridge or Glenwood Ave. in Bloomfield it's not hard to find. Atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. The potato salad is good, collard greens, yams, and of course, the fish. May wait at times but it's worth it.
I could wait to post my feedback on this place. It was like walking into a world of grease. I can still taste the food! Still, to this day exactly 4 months, 7 days and 3 hours later, I cringe as we drive by. I was hit up by a grandmother and her grandaughter to buy fish for their hungered souls as I was walking briskly to the outhouse-I mean the restroom. Upon refusal I was reprimanded by a big bossomed african american woman for not doing so. Why not feed the starving? I thought I was doing them a favor! I think? DO NOT GO THERE! Unless your stomach is made of iron and your hair is unfrizzable.
