Went here for lunch with a friend recently- great deal and great sushi. It was about $10 for 2 rolls of sushi (not just cali rolls), miso soup and a salad. I'd definitely go here again.
The ambience is lovely; the food is delectable.
The food is terrific, but I've yet to have a meal here when I haven't been given the check while still chewing. The waitresses are pleasant enough, but seem hell bent on turning around the tables. Are they hooked up to some kind of electric shock system that zaps them if they don't keep you moving? It's so pressure-ful that we order takeout rather than endure the rush.
We go there often and have never had that experience. They do get busy and have the best sushi in town in my opinion.
I have been dining at Dai Kichi for as long as it has been open and I have always left satisfied. The owner and staff are welcoming, the service is always top notch, and the sushi is always fresh. The specials have been very impressive recently, especially the tuna napolean tartare. I also highly recommend the smoked tuna sashimi.
Chris - I can't agree enough about the tuna napoleon tartare. I've told many people about it. It is near the top of my list of the best dishes I have ever had the pleasure to indulge in. The combination of flavors is so unique but they just absolutely sing. Dai Kichi's Katsu Don is also hands-down awesome.
Their Fantastic Roll, is nothing short of fantastic! That is what keeps me coming back. That and the sushi chefs are so amazing, especially Tomas! We ran out of saki once, and the liquor store was closed, so he poured us some from his private bottle! Best sushi ever.
I went last night. The service was great. The sushi was average. However, I was puzzled about why they minced up the fish in my yellowtail/scallion and salmon/avo roll. The fish was mushy and gross, as if someone chewed it up already. The sashimi yellowtail and salmon was good, so I was basically puzzled about why they mangled the rolls. Also, the shrimp tempura appetizer was fine, but when it came time for the shrimp tempura roll, they seemed to use a smaller shrimp without the fluffy panko breading, and it tasted really plain. The moral, do not order the rolls here! The green tea ice cream was great, funny how it looks like they wrap it in bread and drop it in the fryer. Ichiban in West Caldwell is much better for quality fish and rolls. I will not go back to dai-kichi again since rolls are my favorite, and theirs are GROSS.
We have been going to Dai Kichi for almost 8 years, and have tried MANY other sushi places (NJ, NY, FL..) We always come back to Dai Kichi. The sushi chefs are great-so friendly and willing to make anything. The fish melts in your mouth. I can't say enough. I have been to Nobu in NY, and it was amazing..Dai kichi is the quality sushi without all the hype, and a fraction of the price. This is for true sushi lovers.
We love to eat here. Everytime a new Japanese restaurant opens in town we try it and then we come back here. The service is friendly and polite, the sushi is good quality and always fresh. To find better food we could probably drive to Fort Lee or NYC, but why go so far...and they are all so expensive...I visited Japan very often and have to say that Dai Kichi is comparable to many sushi restaurant there.
it was ok. my sister had the shrimp tempura lunch, and i had the spicy shrimp tempura roll. my roll was pretty overpriced, even if it was a special roll. it only came with 5 pieces. and there was a burned tempura broccoli in my sister's dish. and they do tempura onion...yuck. the service was good, but the food, which is what i assume most people go to restaurants for, was pretty disappointing for the price you pay.
so what's the story here folks? i moved here recently from a place w/ really good sushi and would much prefer to eat traditional sushi to new dreck but with the bloody beating and all on the premises, i wonder if anyone will ever eat at this place again. seems very david lynch to me and not in a good way.
Won't step foot in this place ever again. Besides the fish being WAY less than fresh, the vibe is creepy. Yes, you're rushed here, and yes, the owner actually sits down and asks you to order more so he can have more $$. And it looks dirty, tired and oh so creepy. Have to send back edamame time and time again until they serve it HOT, as requested.
Yes I recall that they never could serve the edamame hot and I would have to send it back. Try Aki on Broad Street, safe haven for the Daikichi refugee.
This is my favorite sushi digs. Out of all the newer japanese- johnny -come- latelys, this place always serves up right. I don't know about you but when I eat sushi I'm not really looking for 'experimental dishes'. I love their Hijiki Don black seaweed salad, its better than Nobu!
