Hop off the train at Walnut Street and step in for a cold one at one of Montclair's few watering holes. Burgers, casual bar-style fare and an atmosphere to match.

some really nice people work there and the food is unusually good for a bar-like environment. it's always dark in there and the constant rumbling of the train can get annoying while you eat. if you do not like heavy crowds, stay clear at night - especially on weekends. it still boggles my mind how nobody has stumbled out of there drunk and passed out on the tracks yet. can't say a bar just feet from the train tracks is pure genius.
I never stepped foot into this place but noticed the other day that it was closed.
What happened???
Still open, new name. Erie Saloon. Anyone know why? Same people seem to be running the place. Good looking bartenders!
Really like the location but the service was horrible. The waitress even thried charging us for all our drinks during the 2 for 1 happy hour. I don't like being scammed.
Sorry but we won't go back. Too bad other thatn the horrible service, the place was ok.
This place is nothing compared to the Harrison Avenue Tavern. Come to the H.A.T for cheap drinks and good food at anytime of day.
In a town that has a lot of good restaurants but very few really nice bars, Montclair's Erie Saloon (nee Depot Square) is one of the best. An added attraction is that it's at the Walnut St. NJT station (which, by the way, should have weekend service, but doesn't). The atmosphere is affably democratic and its small space makes it chummy if sometimes crowded. Since the change-over, they've dropped my favorite appetizer/bar-food item, french fries with mozarella cheese and gravy--a biiig mistake! The service is deceptively good. I say that because it's a very casual place but the staff is on the ball and very friendly. Someone made a crack about the bartenders--the, mostly--women who work that position are indeed very pretty but moreso very efficient and gracious. If you want to be comforatble, drink with friends or just wind down waiting for the 6:12, the Erie Saloon is what you want and what a pub should be.
Depot Square was just the antidote for the overcrowding problem at Tierneys. While I'm not sure the Tierneys owners are all that into it, Depot Square, along with Egan and Sons, have given back to me and the hubby some much welcome space on Saturday nights at our favorite bar, Tierneys- home, by the way, to the best darn hamburger in Montclair.
