Even before I moved in down the street, my southern nose found Mr. Jefferson's. When my daughter was at the Pre-K and her clas was studying bears, Mr. J. made a pan of biscuits for a bear's tea party: biscuits, honey and heaven. For those times you want real homey food and are not in a hurry, Jefferson's is the place. Forget heart healthy just dig food that will make your heart happy.
We LOVE Jeffersons and make sure we go several times a year with the family.
We went on New Year's Day and had the most wonderful food; biscuits that melted in your mouth, perfectly brown hash browns, and soft creamy grits. It was such a treat, but we will wait til our waistlines get back to normal before going again.
Went last night because of the three previous posts. Menu has lots of chicken, burgers, fried shrimp and lots of southern sides. The yams/sweet potatos were great. I didn't care for the french fries but I've always been a steak fries person. My boyfriend really liked his burger and we expect to go back to try the chicken and biscuits. People were very nice too. FYI - They're closed on Mondays.
I totaly agree with the first coment. It totaly is a hidden jewel, great business man restaurant man,the food is unbelivable it's a great kicking back spot I'm a grits lover.I love good home cooking that's what Mr J. brings to montclair.I'm telling you don't miss out.My son loves the cheese omeletes. My wife the cod fish. And my 4 yr old daughter her mac and cheese the best i ever had,the home fries make me melt, definetely the best HF in this town and it's surroundings.
Where is Maple Street
Glenfield School is on the corner of Bloomfield Ave and Maple Street.
My husband and I went here a while back after a write up on Barista. The place was dirty, the service was clueless and the food was average (at best). There were many comments to that effect. Not sure where they all went?
You're right nicole, the negative commments have disappeared. The place did need some cleaning!
If you haven't figured it out yet, this is not the place to read or write about food.
Wow! Just stumbled on this old thread tonight. Looks like the posts that told the unflattering truth about this place evaporated as fast as the years open, organic garbage and disrespect for the surrounding community disappeared from the adjacent driveway - less than a month before the town manager declared we have a cleaner town! (After more than four years of neighbors trying to talk to the owner and complaining to the code and health departments).
That's ok. Some of us have integrity, as well as pre-cover-up photographs that document the truth. As usual, when it comes to the 4th Ward, lower standards for quality of life must be accepted or ignored. Thanks.
This place is a hidden jewel. It has great southern style cooking. I crave their breakfasts; biscuits, grits, cheese eggs, french toast. Mr. J also makes incredible fried chicken.
