If you haven't been to Indigo Smoke's new location (just a few doors down from their old digs), you're in for a treat. There's lots of blue to be sure, but more importantly, the new space is larger and swankier, with plenty more tables, better to enjoy what is Baristaville's unique Kansas city BBQ/soul food fusion fare. Lunch specials are served in these sweet ceramic tray style dishes, so you can enjoy the to-die-for sweet potatoes, BBQ baked beans, or collard greens without mixing flavors. The beef brisket sandwich is a melt-in-your-mouth affair, seasoned to perfection. Fried chicken was crispy outside, and tender-moist inside.
We're also wild about the crispy Indigo fries, spiced just right and cut wedge-style. For dessert, a tartlet of pecan pie had a unique waffle-like crust, blueberry cobbler was heavenly and a hot chocolate pudding cake satisfied chocolate cravings and then some. -- Liz George

This place rocks! I'll admit to not having gone to many soul food places, but the food here is, hands down, awesome!.
They used to have a $10 lunch buffet at the old site, greatest value around. Sure do miss it.
Same old story...
Business is good, decides to expand, prices go up, service goes down.
Boo
I was an Indigo smoke addict...went there at least a couple of times a month.
Tried the new place- ordered a ton of takeout. Was met with snotty attitude, and the prices were much higher. Food was still good.
But won't be going there as much now...
My partner and I visited Indigo Smoke last night for the first time. Being originally from Texas and a fantastic cook, he's quite spoiled me when it comes to BBQ and southern/south-western foods. So I'll say that I came away from Indigo a little dissapointed, perhaps because my expectations were for a superior BBQ experience. I found the BBQ ribs acceptible but average in flavor, and a little bit dry. My partner reported that his fried chicken was distinctly "OK", nothing to rave about.
Ambience is mildly upscale, certainly so for a BBQ 'joint'. Someone else here recently commented that it's more of a 'date' place than a kick back with buddies place -- I agree.
Service was weak and for some may be quite unacceptible. Several ordered items never arrived, and the wait staff was inattentive at best.
For BBQ rib fans, I'd recommend you try Jim Dandy's in Nutley. The ribs are very good, but beware: It's attached to a bar called the Mud Hole, so it can a be a bit loud. Definately not the 'date' sort of place, but buddies to kick back with? Oh yeah.
My husband and I absolutely love the food here. We used to eat here often. Because of their service, however, we started to simply call in our orders and pick up the food. Unfortunately, when calling in our last order, the person on the phone was completely rude to me for no reason. My husband thought it best that we don't eat there anymore. I can't say I disagree with him. To the Barista readers- it may seem like we are being petty for dropping this restaurant over one incident from one server, but it truly has been a progression of poor service over a period of time. It's one thing if the poor service was due to things like not having the table set, or not bringing drinks out, or forgetting a side dish, or even slow service- most times is forgiveable in my eyes. Though not the most professional- such things are understandable if the place is very busy or if a server is new. But rude behavior? Dining out is an experience that's more than just great food. I've hostessed, waitressed and worked retail- it's just as easy to be pleasant as it is to be nasty. As a consumer I don't want to feel like I am paying for food with someone's attitude problem tacked on to it.
I'm going tonight for my buddy's birthday with his wife
i will get back to you
I have been to Indigo Smoke three times in the past three days! Obviously, I love the food. I took my mother and she said the fried whiting was the best she has ever had. I will be going very often. Where else can I get soul food with good service, hot waitresses, and incredibly excellent tasting food? I'm looking for more like this; for now, I'm going to Indigo Smoke at least once a week!
