My second dining experience at Deja Vu was similar to my first experience. I had a lot of service issues. From the time we ordered our food to the time we had to ask for it was about 50 minutes. They than brought out our meals (completely forgetting our apps) and they where cold. Our drinks followed a few moments later. What we did it was ok but the overall experience was not good. Based on my first experience which was similar I will not be back any time soon.
This was my third trip back to Deja Vu, I really want to like this place, the atmosphere is very relaxing and laid back, the service is hit or miss, I had horrible service and then I had great service this past weekend. The food was about the same, hit or miss - the escargot was awesome, the thai bbq chicken left alot to be desired. The crowd there is a little strange, nothing seems to really come together and it is always just a little to warm in there. Three times, still not impressed, i tried!
The food is amazing. The green papaya salad, the green curry chicken and the garlic shrimp stuffed with crab are all top picks-can't go wrong with any of them. The service has improved over the past year. Over all, food does not get much better than this! We eat there quite a bit and get take out atleast once a month.
Went here Thursday night. The appetizers were good but not great. The french onion soup was bad b/c we didn't like swiss cheese. We ordered two and received one first so within a moment we asked that the other soup not be delivered to our table. The waitress said no. She said they had to give it to us because it was almost ready. After another explanation from us, she decided not to bring it to our table. The dinner was okay after that. The chicken with the 3 dipping sauces was good although my party didn't care for 2 of the 3 sauces. I may try this place for takeout another time, but the service really wasn't great. Although, our waiter who brought us our drinks was very nice. It just seemed crazy that they were going to serve and charge us for something we didn't like and asked not to receive.
Nicki:
If they already had the soup ready to put on your table, they can't reuse it any more than if you'd started eating it. So of course they charged you for it. It's not "crazy."
U ordered it
they made it
U pay for it
doesn't matter if U eat it or not
This is my favourite Thai restaurant. The food takes a while to get to your table because the food is prepared very fresh, and many times by the owners themselves. What's the rush? Sit back and relax. English is not the staff's first language, so be patient and clear. If you order for take out - also allow an hour. The flavors are great. There is nothing typical about this place and that's what makes it great.
If you order something and there is a big problem with the service or the entree isn't palatable, no restaurant worth its salt will make you pay for it. They will want you to have a pleasant dining experience.
Deja Vu pulled this same garbage with me and my husband a few years ago. We went there for our anniversary. They were expanding the restaurant and had their construction crew in. After we ordered, the construction crew began using a power drill or something for an extended period of time. The waitstaff promised that the workers would be leaving soon. We waited another 15 minutes. We decided to leave. The waitress YELLED at us saying that we couldn't leave without paying because the food was almost ready to be served. Give me a break. They had ears, they heard the power drill, they saw the clouds of dry wall floating about. We came there for a romantic dinner. We were paying not just for food but for the ambience. I had never been so livid about a restaurant experience in my life.
I definitely think that the service and attitude left a lot to be desired. I wouldn't return there again. There are too many other professional and delectable choices in this town.
"laila's mom": People like you are the scourge of restaurant owners and employees everywhere. If you didn't like the noise, you shouldn't have ordered; ordering and then getting up after they'd already started making your meal is stealing. You should have just reached into the register and taken the money directly; at least that way you wouldn't have wasted the cook's time and taken up a table that could've been used for another (paying) customer.
I don't know if Keith W. didn't bother to read laila's mom's post, but I find it incredible that he would still claim that they should have paid for their food. As laila's mom said, "if you order something and there is a big problem with the service or the entree isn't palatable, no restaurant worth its salt will make you pay for it."
She's not talking about minor issues like a little too much spice in the soup or issues outside of the restaurant's control, such as a group of noisy diners. Having construction going on during operating hours was wholly within Deja Vu's control--particularly given that the construction industry tends to be on a different schedule than the restaurant industry (i.e. construction jobs tend to get started by 7am, while restaurants don't have any customers before at a minimum 11am or 12 noon).
The wait staff assured laila's mom that the construction would be over quickly; when it was not, the restaurant failed to hold up their end of the bargain. I doubt I personally would have just tried to walk out, but I definitely would have gotten up from my table and personally searched out the manager (rather than merely asking for the manager to stop by my table) to both complain about the poor service and indicate that I would not be staying there unless the construction stopped immediately.
Thank you Austin, for actually reading my post.
Keith W. I think that you are a bit confused. When we walked in to the construction they assured us that it would be over momentarily and then continued to reassure us over the next 15 minutes. THEY did not uphold their end of the bargain. I think it is ridiculous to assume that any person would want to eat there once clouds of dry wall is floating about. And it was a weeknight that happened to have many tables open.
At a restaurant you are paying for the experience as well as the food. Actually, they should have come forward with apologies and insisted that we come back another time.
I did NOT steal money out of their pockets and I did not sneak out the door. I spoke to them and explained that we would not be staying since they misrepresented the extent of the construction. Whether or not they thought it would go on that long or be that disruptive does not matter. It did go on that long and they still let us sit there like idiots assuring us that it would stop.
I have NEVER left any other restaurant EVER other than this one. So, I highly doubt that I am as hideous of a human as you are so rashly suggesting. I think your comments were a slight bit overdramatic and actually very unfair. It was an extrodinary circumstance that the restaurant should have owned up to.
Dear laila's mon,
You just seem to me like a whiny old bitch,Stay the hell out of the restaurants in Montclair, PLEASE!!!
We have had the most amazing meals at Deja Vouz/Sri Thai. The appetizers are incredible: spicy beef salad, curried chicken puffs, shrimp shao mai. Yum! Far superior to the other "pan-Asian"/"Asian-fusion" restaurants in town.
Sally,
Shame on you for being so nasty.
I have never done anything to you and as I mentioned before, I never have had any other type of experience like that at any other establishment. I frequent many Montclair restaurants, leave very nice tips, and am extremely appreciative and polite.
However, based only on your post, you seem to be extremely impolite. Your opinions are certainly ones I don't value. So you can continue to insult me with your base language, but it only reflects upon you.
Why is it so many of these reviews wind up becoming nasty, insulting, personal assults! Can we all just stick to reviewing restaurants & stop with the personal attacks?? Please?
Ate here yesterday. Wanted to try Indigo Smoke but they close from 3-4.
One of the first things we noticed was the fungus growing in the fish tank due to the water being still. I'm guessing a pump was broken and hasn't been replaced for several weeks.
The curry puff appetizer was excellent but the rest of the meal was a letdown. I felt a bit ripped off for what we paid. I might come here agian for the curry puff and iced coffee but that's all.
Walked in recently w/ the wife & had an OKAY meal. The waiter told us "menu is the same, but prices are lower" - BUT the noodle dish I had was the SAME price as it was under the old owners - and it is a real bad value. A noodle dish with NO MEAT for $12.95 should be a HUGE portion. Food is good - but the prices arent balanced so some dishes are a good deal & some are a gyp.
Went here twice, first time I ordered out and was kinda dissapointed with the portions. Next time I ate in and the spring rolls were awesome and the service was great. The only complaint I have is the portions are way too small. If you want good portions try Topaz Thai on Washington Ave in Belleville.
This place is great. The food is consistantly very good. The service is usually slow, but I think that that is nice. You NEVER feel rushed like in some places that are eager to "flip" the tables. It's a great first date spot as there is a lot of time to sit, relax, talk to your dinner date and get to know them. It's also a great place to go out with a group of friends as again, they never ever rush you. The food is always very good, so when it finally does get to your table everyone is happy and impressed!
Great job Deja Vu!
bealelover, why are you reviewing a closed restaurant 5 months after it closed?
The place that replaced it, Thai Chili just closed as well. We need a good seafood restaurant in town, I'm glad Egans is opening up Oppenheimers but i'm sure there's the market for a second one. We also need a good korean bbq place.
A nice surprise-- recommended! Ask to sit in the red half of the restaurant for a better atmosphere. Food and service are above par. Very light and fresh. New flavors blend perfectly together.
