A Breakfast Worth Skipping Lunch For

Wednesday, July 4, 2007

Mysterbreakfast

The food is incredible... flaky biscuits, split and glistening with butter. Crispy bacon. Perfectly turned out French toast -- dusted with powdered sugar and so good in fact, syrup is almost akin to gilding the lily. Then there is the generous slab of bone-in ham steak (cut some and eat it in the biscuit like a sandwich).

The ultimate test of breakfast greatness? The home fries. Forget those mushy orangey lumps plopped on the plate like an afterthought at some breakfast joints. These are crispy, flavorful and redolent with onion. Best home fries I've had in a long time. Where did I have breakfast? First to accurately guess in comments gets our new food-related Barista schwag.

And the winner is...

Bookista, who correctly guessed Jefferson Cafe & Market, where Jefferson, who hails from Mississippi, along with his terrific staff, bring lip-smacking good food (grits, too) and Southern hospitality to Montclair.

...if it's the 115 Cafe the biscuits
and ham are ice cold because it took 40 minutes to reach the table.

We know it's not Bluestone Coffee because they're too cheap to buy plastic tumblers let alone a flower for
the table.

I loved Jefferson's until I saw a roach crawling on the table. I will never go back!!!!

Dear Baristanet,

Please stop sending us to places that the locals love. We hoi polloi do not wish to infringe on their rights to have a peaceful meal without the glaring interference of Louis (Vuitton, that is), Stella (McCartney, that is), or Donatella (Versace, that is).

Many bouquets to your effort to integrate, but can we just stick to the high priced establishments that litter the landscape that is Montclair, and greet with open arms anyone that is the color of green?

Well we love Jeffersons and always have.

Just went to Jeffersons today on the advice of this site. The food was good...the wait/service was horrible. Waiting for my food I saw two other parties complaining about not getting what they ordered. The place could seriously use a cleaning. I think I'll hold off going back until they get the place in shape!

Like the food, the filth has been a tradition at this Cafe for a very long time!

Posted by diversity=double standards | April 2, 2007 11:05 AM

Went there for the first time yesterday. Prices were GREAT. Food was very good but yes, the cafe was dirty.

Posted by Anne | April 8, 2007 1:06 PM

Soooooo.....True for you that are honest! Mr. J knows the health department head...because this place should have been sited for the FILTH! But if your stomach don't turn, the biscuits will be the best you've had!

Posted by TRINI HOTTIE | April 17, 2007 1:28 PM

You have got to be kidding us with this place. Food was average at best and the service was AWFUL. Baristanet has officially steered us WRONG here!!!

Posted by Nicole | April 22, 2007 8:35 PM

Shame on Tom Restaino, Frank Leslie and Manager Joe Hartnett. If Jefferson's Cafe had been in the Valley Road, Watchung Plaza, or Church St/Bloomfield Avenue business districts, or serving candy and ice cream to kids from ANY other part of town, he would have been fined and shut down at least at least ten years ago. Allowing this in our neighborhood is not diversity, it is patronizing at best and racism at its disrespectful worst.

Baristanet,

Anytime you need a new food critic, please let me know. I agree with the commenters above - you've steered us wrong on a few lately, including Ray's Luncheonette. Please keep it real, you know we will.

Most food critics don't go unnoticed, eateries always put there best foot forward when they know a newspaper, or a popular food tasting person is on the premises.

So I think I will start giving reviews as a undercover critic, since I’m always going out to eat at 5 stars restaurants and the corner hot dog truck, from cape may to north jersey, sometimes I go with parties of 2-8 people. I will start posting my reviews at the Essex county forum a week or two after visiting the eatery.

I will not have any alliance to any eatery, I will not favorite a town or county, I will not look for free food or special treatment, I will not give stars for degree of excellences… just the truth base on my opinion… a cook by hobby, and a well traveled experience patron of eateries.
