Where Not to Be Seen

Tuptim

You know where to go when someone suggests lunch. Raymond's right? Or else, the new hot lunch upstart, Toast, where you're also likely to run into your "A"-list moms. Both restaurants have fabulous menus and adorable surroundings. Either is great if you want both a salad and exposure.

But what if you'd like a place where you're likely to run into nobody? We won't question you about your reasons. Let's just say you have a delicate piece of *business* to discuss, and you'd like to do it without the busybody from the Home and School Association right behind you.

Here are a couple of suggestions that won't set you back more than $10 a person, where the atmosphere is both quiet, elegant and (dare we say?) romantic, and where you're likely to be able to take home a goody bag as well.

1 The grand dame of Montclair's Thai eateries, Tuptim, which preceded all the other Thai restaurants in town, never used to be open before dinner. For a few months, it's been serving a daily lunch special, but the day we went, we had the restaurant -- with it lush dark interior -- to ourselves. All the entrees on the lunch menu go for $9.95 and include lemongrass soup or salad. The special mixed appetizers for two ($14) is a delight. Or bypass the lunch menu altogether and order our favorite dish -- the meal-sized duck salad from the dinner menu.

Tuptim is located at 600 Bloomfield Ave. and serves lunch from 11:30 to 2:30.

Toscana_2Over at Toscana, you get an old-world exposed-brick ambience that comes, at lunchtime, without much in the way of hustle and bustle. Tuesday through Friday, Toscana offers a "business lunch" special, featuring a choice of four paninis or wraps for $7.95 or a choice of five entrees, with soup or salad, for $9.95.  We chose a very satisfying Chicken Tre Funghi marsala wine sauce, and took half of it home.Toscana, which serves wine, is located at 1099 Broad St. in Bloomfield.

Both restaurants have plenty of choices for vegetarians and (for lunch at least) don't require a reservation. -- Debbie Galant

Does Richie Cecere's have lunch? Nori Sushi is always great, Sesame, Indigo Smoke, Giotto

Trysting is always better in a restaurant that serves wine. Tryst me.

"A-list moms"? You've got to be kidding me.

Oh. Paparazzi was quicker to the draw. :)

Hey Barista ... I think its time to go through the restaurant listings on the left column and update the closed and newly-opened venues ... at the very least, it should be updated quartery/seasonally.

Thanks Jim -- the page is soon to undergo its own redesign and so the listings will be edited.

Posted by Liz | July 24, 2007 12:34 PM

Would it be possible, as part of the redesign, to include basic info like the restaurant's hours (lunch? breakfast?) and a link to their website (if they have one)?

The Cheese Shop is now Sandwich Theory. Dumb name (previous name was quaint, if not accurate). Desparately needs renovation and updating. There is a lack of nice, sit-down delis in the area. Watchung Deli has superb quality, but no place to sit. Haven't been to Allan's Deli on Bloomfield in years (used to be good).

Since I am not an A-list mom, would you tell me where to go for lunch on weekends? I've tried Holsten's already (still new to Baristaville).

I second the motion for updating the restaurants on the left, and having a link to their websites would be fantastic. I'd love to know who's open for lunch etc. We could all help you in postings.

...if Toast is the 'hot new upstart'
we're in deep trouble with our restaurant scene.

My lawn mower has never run better since
using their coffee instead of gasoline.

Jim,
Back in the day, believe it or not, The Cheese Shop actually was a cheese shop. In the late 80's cheese kinda went out of vogue (thank god that trend is over)and the Cheese Shop was sold to a guy who wanted to take it in more of a deli direction. He kept the name, but made the changes he thought would be good for business. I was kinda sad when I learned they had renamed the place.

This site is becoming more and more useless every day. There are spam postings on half of these restaurant pages anyway! And with comments like "A-list Moms" you're alienating a lot of potential readers. This one is out of here.

A-list moms (snort snort). Give us a break. How pretentious - but then again, some of the moms in Montclair are as well and would probably preen to hear themselves described thusly. I am a mom, but don't care to be A-list - like Kathy Griffin, I'll be D-list - it's less stifling and a hell of a lot more fun.

And I agree with Mike - doesn't Toast have a long way to go in improvements? But now we're citing this as proof that Montclair has a "scene"? What drivel.

Toast is the 'hot new' restaurant?

Please.

Just because they advertise here doesn't
mean you stretch the truth.

I heard a rumor that a great sandwhich shop that is already in downtown montclair is opening a second location into the old orion spot.

You see A list moms; I see women vying to see who can talk the loudest, who can keep their adorable brats somewhat under control and who can attract others to perhaps smile at the adorable brat who is wriggling into the next table at Raymond's booth area or annoying a too-near person attempting to dine at Toast.

I'm sorry, Toast is not "hot" nor is it "cool." Rather, I like its lack of pretension; however, give it a month or so...

Toast is getting better; Raymond's is Raymond's.

Also try the Ethiopian restaurant on Bloomfield Ave. (name escapes me at the moment). Went there for lunch once and had the place to ourselves. Lovely.
