Meet Me At Jackie's

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

soup.jpgWhy do I keep returning to Jackie's Grillette - Upper Montclair's newest upscale deli? I love the warmth it exudes - from the savory food, from owner Tina Arsheed and her staff, to the classy decor (tomato red and granny smith green walls). I like its comfort-factor: get a pick-me-up at the espresso and juice bar, pop-in alone or with friends for a sweet treat; pick up a quick take-out and dash out the back door to catch the train, or a enjoy a speedy dine-in before a movie; it's kid-friendly (fresh fruit smoothies, pastries!), and serves from the breakfast, lunch and dinner menu all day.

About themenu: there's a wide range of omelettes, salads, wraps, sandwiches, and entrees - many vegetarian choices - often infused with a Mediterranean twist.

The first time I stopped in I tried the day's special: Tina's homemade (really!) vegetarian lentil soup - with a palate-pleasing zest of lemon and fresh parsley. I asked for a half tuna melt to go with it. Jackie's Grillette didn't disappoint - well seasoned with a bit of crunchy sweet red pepper. My friend's grilled marinated veggie sandwich with fresh mozz and pesto was devoured with gusto.

I went back with my Man later that week and we got wrapped in the place, literally.

Wrap.jpgThe Mediterranean wrap (right) is a surprising treat: tangy, lemon grilled chicken breast slices with tabouli and hummus in a spinach tortilla. Delicious, it surpassed my expectations. The wraps are big enough to share for a light lunch -- but I wasn't about to give up more than a bite. My Man loves his roast beef rare, and savored "Jackie's Special" hero, loaded with beef, bacon, swiss, coleslaw, and russian dressing. (It was an "I'll have what she's having" moment.) We finished off lunch with cappuccinos and Tina's homemade baklava. It was just the right touch.

One my third visit, I tried the shop's best seller - Cobb salad in a wrap. It had everything you would expect, wrapped up in a huge bundle - egg, avocado, bacon, turkey, lettuce and tomato. Jackie's serves it with honey mustard, but they graciously fulfilled my request for Blue Cheese. This lunch was also a home run.

There were equally appetizing vegetarian platters of falafel, stuffed grape leaves, hummus and tabouli at a neighboring table - one of several interesting Middle Eastern menu items - like the kabob platters. That's what I'll be ordering on my next visit to Jackie's Grillette. 614 Valley Road, Upper Montclair. Free Wi-Fi. Open seven days, Monday - Saturday 7am-9pm, Sunday 7:30am-6pm. 973-744-0090.

This review is dead on. And free wi-fi at such a gem is a great added bonus. Plus the coffee rocks!

I'll have to try it again. The first time I went, I was not impressed, but they might have worked out the kinks.

I read this this morning and went there for lunch with my friend. He had the hummus with tomato and onion breakfast sandwich and I had the veggie pita with hummus, tomato, and greens. A side of fries and some baba ganouj later, we were stuffed.

It's a cute place, and I'll definitely be going there again. My boyfriend and I are vegan, and Veggie Heaven is starting to get a bit boring (and expensive, if not during their lunch hours).

This is my new favorite place for lunch (Sorry, Dave... The Cheese Shop...uh... Sandwich Theory.. will always have a special place in my heart!). This is a great alternative to the regular sandwich. The service is great, the food delicious, especially the soups.

Is this place related to the very nice people who own The Plaza Shop?

Posted by gail | December 6, 2007 7:48 AM

Yes - same family that owns Plaza Shppe in Watchung plaza - nice to see it (and them)doing well.

Their felafel is the best I've had here in the US. They know their spices.

Instead of writing out the address, could we just say what occupied the space before? Then I would know where it was.

Went there today for the first time and I will be back often! Had the chicken caeser wrap and felafel. The felafel is by far the best in town- tahini is perfect as well! Love that you can get chocolate truffles as well- and the owners are so so nice!

Went their for lunch this week, and it was great. It's amazing how some people get it right from the beginning while others struggle to find their place. The decor is also perfect and makes it a very inviting atmosphere. Will definitely make this a weekly ritual!

I went there for lunch today and had the grilled chicken pita (chicken, lettuce, tomato, honey mustard sauce), which was pleasant. The service was fair, but I noticed a marked difference in how they treated "regulars" vs. "newbies."

As someone wrote above, it's the same as the Plaza Shoppe in watchung plaza, just 25% more expensive. Same employees and all. The only difference is the Jackies grill offers falafel and some very high priced greek food. I would expect the higher prices given the toney address. Difficult parking at times, i would go to the Plaza Shoppe deli instead if you're closer - the gyro's bigger there anyway, and you don't have the annoying hoity-toity self-entitled williams sonoma shopping bunch there. As far as the food - very good, but pricey.

i ordered take out from here for the first time since they opened. i dont know if its just me but the portions got ALOT smaller. i ordered 2 wraps, and although they were tastey, they were not worth the price. they also did not come with the side salads it was supposed to come with. i should have said something but i didnt notice that until i got home. oh well..

Umm, up there..you're saying that you ordered take out for the "FIRST TIME" then how would you know if the portions got a lot smaller? Plus, the food there is excellent and so is the service. I went there for lunch with my girlfriend, and I've never tasted food like this. It was unbelievable! I love the owner Tina, shes so cute. I absolutley love the Hummus and the Falafel. Last time i went there i got the Lentil Soup, Falafel, and a hummus plate for my girlfriend and I and the PORTIONS were great and the food was awesome!Oh, and I will definitely be back there again!

I've been a few times now. I think the food's great and the decor is nice too.
Falafels pretty good. Chicken caesar wrap and chicken salad sandwich good too.
The soups look amazingly fresh, the vegetable soup was pretty good and well presented.

I've had the 1/2 soup 1/2 sandwich deal. They don't advertise it, you have to ask.
