Although this little gem in East Rutherford is not as close as other Thai options, my wife and I LOVE this place and have been back many times; indeed, we're now regulars!
For a decent-sized place, the ambience is intimate and relaxing and the decor is simply beautiful. More than that though, what sets Ploi Thai apart from other local Thai restaurants is the excellent, authentic food. It's freshly prepared, traditional, yet a little different too - especially the superb weekly special menus, which consistently comprise of delectable interpretations of the usual Thai food that we're used to, plus some inventive dishes we've never had before (like Coconut Shrimp with mango sauce and the sizzling Firecracker Shrimp - mmmm!). For first-timers here, definitely order at least one dish from the special menu - you won't be disappointed.
Regular menu items we love: the soups and Chicken Satay appetizers, the Duck Salad is heavenly and the Spicy Fried Rice rocks. Oh, and any curry will do! There's also a huge and varied veggie menu which is really good (even for normally carnivorous folk like me). We also occasionally get take-out and go there for lunch which is incredibly good value, especially the lunch special. Big Bowl Noodle Soups are a must!
The owner, Randy, is really lovely. She and her staff are very attentive and accommodating (especially when we bring our 18-mth-old baby). We know we're regulars when we're greeted by name and are made to feel right at home. All in all, a highly recommended dining experience. Ploi Thai is absolutely well worth a visit if you're looking to expand your Thai cuisine horizons or want to jump-start a Thai appetite that has been wearied by the usual local fare.
