Watch out for the spicy BBQ sauce - it's four-alarm!!! All desserts are home made by Kim - and the chocolate sour cream cake is worth the calories!

I second the previous post...we wanted barbecue the other night, realized indigo smoke was closed tuesdays, and took a chance on the wood pit. the ribs & pulled pork were great and so was that hot sauce...we're not talking RUB or Dinosaur cue or Daisy Mae great, but good for montclair. give it a shot.
this place is great. sliced beef sandwich or pulled pork sandwich are great bargains. the smoked chicken wings are some of the best wings i have ever had. the only catch is you have to ask for the good(spicy) sauce or they just give you the regular bbq sauce, which is good but not much kick. very friendly staff/owners. try the red velvet cake.
Tiredofdopes, I have to take exception with your statement that the Wood Pit's BBQ isn't as good as the NYC joints you mentioned.
I've eaten there many times; food is always exceptional and Kim and Lawrence are the nicest people you'll ever meet. I've eaten at Dinosaur and RUB, and I think the Wood Pit is better.
Last time I was there, a couple had driven out *from NYC* to eat Lawrence's BBQ because they'd read about it online. They agreed it was better than anything they'd had at the restaurants you mentioned in the city. And the husband was from Kansas City, so I'd say he knows a little something about BBQ...
Don't dismiss a Montclair restaurant just because it isn't in New York!
Ok, I'm not going to lie - I think I had mismanaged expectations going into my first visit to The Wood Pit based on the positive reviews. The staff was incredibly nice, definitely no complaints about that, but, I must admit, I wasn't 100% satisfied with my meal. I ordered a combo sandwich, chopped pork and brisket, which claims is big enough for two. I'm not that huge of a guy, but I ate the sandwich down and was still hungry at the end. I don't understand why two slices of wonderbread with meat on it is enough for two people?!?! Other than portion size, the food was great. The meat was smokey, hearty, and delicious. Both the mild signature sauce and super spicy sauce were excellent, but $8 for a sandwich that left me needing more was unimpressive. I may or may not return.
cant say enough good things about this place! Great food, and Kim is one of the best owners you will meet. I agree with schlmeil that the portions arent fit for two, and I would suggest that she use niccolos bread, but I will always come back
We found this little gem here on Baristanet last weekend. The three of us enjoyed it so much that we are going back there this Friday! Rave reviews: brisket, ribs, red velvet cake, peach cobbler, and apple pie with oatmeal crust.
Had a great lunch there Saturday, and they are preparing most of the food for our Christmas party this coming weekend. Exceptionally nice people, and the hot BBQ sauce is wonderful -- not that spicy that it burns your mouth, but exceptional flavors. Full review after the New Year! (And get on Frank GG's "Nice List" if you can -- he is giving Wood Pit Gift Certificates for Christmas!)
