7Online's Neighborhood Eats gave the star treatment to our very own Watchung Delicatessen. Watch it here.
The newest sandwich is the Ben's Special, and it comes with a little extra mac and cheese.Recipe:
You start with hot chicken cutlets and barbecue sauce, which gets topped with bacon and cheddar. That's all melted together and stuffed into a roll, which then gets further stuffed with hot homemade macaroni and cheese.
Good luck biting into it. You're better off opting for a fork.
The Watchung Deli in Montclair began in the 1920s. Now, two couples own it - Gary and Maureen Kiffer and Jeanne and Robert Johannsen. And to see them all at work is like watching a dance.
And it certainly helps that they know their customers.

What is the point of the Cheddar when you are jamming mac and cheese into it?
Sounds like an attention grabbing gimmick... which of course worked getting itself on this site.
When my kids were little, we called this the "clean deli" and the one down the street "the dirty deli". That was many years ago.The "dirty deli" is now clean too....but Watchung Deli is still my favorite.
It's my family's favorite too, we call it the skinny deli.
We've always called it the German Deli. I think it came from the German potato salad, but it could be that the owners were as well.
Is the other one still called the Plaza Shoppe?
When we have a barbeque we always get two pounds of the German and two pounds of the regular potato salad and mix them. It's quite good. Family friends told us about the combo. I've never asked how they figured it out. "Hey! You got German in my regular! Wow, that tastes great!"
I love this deli! The chicken cutlets are to die for! I don't know why one would put anything on them at all- they are perfect all by themselves!
This deli always has hazelnut wafers and honey candy (my personal favorites).
Best macaroni salad ever!
We call it the German deli too. You know they are the only place I know that sells the boxes of Clinton's iced tea like they used to have at "the truck."
I highly recommend the little cups of custard.
Gary # 3 will keep me coming back for years to come
oh yeah mandy, I forgot about the mac salad. It's the standard by which my family judges all other mac salads.
And those cutlets, mmmmmm.
Now I'm going to have to stop in there this weekend.

RealHawker, if you actually watched the spot, the genesis of that sandwich came from a request by high school students. The only reason the Watchung Deli succeeds is top quality food, service, and atmosphere, not gimmicks.
P.S., I agree their chicken cutlets are wonderful naked, but sometimes I put sauerkraut on top. Try it, you'll like it.
Last summer, I hosted a poker game/barbeque with eight friends and provided a couple of pounds of the macaroni salad. To a man, each said that it was the best they had ever tasted (and I agree of course).
Gonna try the potato salad mix suggested earlier - thanks.
I think today I get some macaroni salad. Upon further reflection, that sandwich is going to keep cardiology in business!
This is a real Deli that harkens back to Winkel's Deli in Jersey City. German, clean and fresh. No fear walking into the store and ordering a liverwurst sandwich with onion and mustard on rye. They know how to make a sandwich. Everything is fresh, and Robert, Gary and crew know their customers. The cucumber salad and iced tea are my favorites. I also patronize the Watchung Plaza Shoppe- the family that runs that store is soooooo nice and the they make a great wrap saandwich too.
This sandwich reminds me of a place in Pittsburgh called Primanti Brothers, a restaurant originally in the warehouse district that served meals for lots of truckers. They have a signature creation that includes grilled meat, cole slaw, tomato, and French fries between two pieces of Italian bread. So good, though I don't think I ever at one of those before the bars let out at 2am.
Can I get #3 without the MSG?
OMG--they are following the Chinese!
these guys rock friends. they just rock. they are the best.
