Bubble Tea, Breads And Yes, Ice Cream, Too

Flatbread Grill opened this month in the space vacated by Carvel on Bellevue Avenue in Upper Montclair. The eatery is attractive with booths, tables and easy chairs near a fake fireplace, and offers a pretty large menu, with an emphasis on grilled meats, served kabob style, salads, flatbread pizzas and other healthy fare. It's also got a full line of coffee, chai and bubble teas as well as pastries. The restaurant, owned by three sisters, is open seven days a week, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Good news for ice cream lovers that miss the former Carvel -- Flatbread Grill has soft serve ice cream at non-Cold Stone prices.

Kabobs, bubble tea, *and* soft ice cream??

Tell me they've got rainbow sprinkles, and I'm moving in permanently... mmmmmmmmm

The young women who own it seem very nice, and I hope they do well. Although I didn't think the Turkish pizza was as good as what I've had in Paterson, I will definitely go back to try other tasty looking pizza toppings. Nice big menu with lots to try. My 10-yr old daughter and I liked the grape leaves at Jackie's Grillette better. Overall, we decided we were "pretty satisfied" with our first visit there and will definitely give them another try. The space is very attractive and comfortable, cozy with a gas fire place.

I'm definitely going to check this place out, but I'm a little confused by what their focus is--kabobs, pizza, bubble tea, and ice cream seems very eclectic.

Where does one park?

The lot behind Bellevue is jammed all day with permit and retail already.

Very good turkey swiss pita. Clean, comfortable and friendly.

Note to Katie: Raymond's serves most breakfast items except pancakes all day until 4.

Oooops- wrong thread!!

Got some takeout kabobs for dinner last weekend. They are still working out the kinks - the person taking my order didn't know much about the menu and couldn't answer any basic questions. The food was not too expensive, but pretty average. On a scale of 1 - 10 I would rate the kabobs a 6, hummus a 5, the breads a 7.

Bubble Tea...
I have tried their Bubble Tea twice so far. Overall...disappointing.

1. Major faux pas with the tapioca balls. Both times, they were still hard in the middle! Obviously they aren't trying their own bubble tea, because the tapioca balls need to be soft straight through the middle.

2. I have never ever had bubble tea in such tiny cups. You need large cups to make room for the tapioca & ice, and STILL have room for the tea. Why are we being charged $4.05 for dixie cups?

If you want real bubble tea, at a good price, you'll have to get it in Chinatown, NYC.

ajoyce, I agree, and have a couple more gripes to add re: Bubble Tea (or Boba, it's more fun-sounding name).

3. Not nearly enough tapioca balls!!! That's the whole point of ordering Bubble Tea!

4. Waaaaay too sweet and milky! I ordered the strawberry tea, which tasted like melted strawberry ice cream that had had additional sugar added to it. When they first handed the cup to me, I was very bummed out about the small size, but after the first swig (which nearly caused a sugar coma), I decided that the whole thing needed going to into the nearest trash can. Yikes. Not very "tea-y" at all.

Errrr, how ironic that my user name is justonce, and on my first (and second!) attempt at posting on baristanet, manage to make that moniker seem absurd! (Really, I was just trying to correct an embarrassing "it's" vs "its" mistake.) ::slinks away::

Went there a couple of weeks ago just to try the bubble tea. Although my almond tea tasted very good, I wasn't happy with teh tapioca balls. They were a little too hard. And like others have said, they do come in small cups for the price they are charging for them. If they make a few more fixes with the bubble tea, they are going to have a make a lot of money this summer.

Justonce, you bring up a good point that I forgot to mention, boba tea is meant to be a tea. I'm disappointed that this drink is not being kept authentic. They should also add some of the more authentic flavors to the menu, like Taro, Sesame, Lychee.

Where I grew up, "tapioca balls" was considered an insult, if not a disease.

I have never encountered such horrible customer service than at Flatbread. I went in today for breakfast (since they clearly advertise breakfast, lunch, and dinner). WHen I asked what the breakfast wrap was the girl responded "we dont serve breakfast" and rudely walked away. Then why is there a breakfast menu? It is fine if they dont sell breakfast anymore, but she was just so rude about it. I have been in about 4 times since they opened and everytime they seem to get worse and worse. Last time I went in I tried to order the Bubble tea but unfortunately they only sell them on Tuesdays!? What is that? Their food is good, but after today I dont think I will return. There are much better places in the area that actually treat their customers with respect.

Flatbread blows.

Jiju, I completely agree with you about the service. My first 3 times there, I asked for the macaroni salad and pickles that come with the flatbread melts (as stated in their menu). All 3 times, I was told that they are not available in a very rude tone. Finally the 4th time, they had the macaroni salad, but told me that the pickles were still being shipped in from Turkey. I am very understanding of the fact that restaurants run out of items at times, however, it is their horrible customer service that is a huge turnoff. I am speaking of the one girl that works behind the counter, who seems to be there every time I go in, which is giving their business a bad reputation. The only reason I kept going back was because of the quality of their food, which seems to take an unusually long time to prepare. All in all, after giving them multiple chances, I will not be going back. There are many other places in town with good food I would rather give my business to.

walked in here once, to a very unwelcoming feel. walked out quickly and went across the street to tinga, which despite the screaming kids makes a great burrito, and the kids aren't really that bad.
