Indigo Smoke Goes Casual

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

IndigoQ.jpgIndigo Smoke is now Indigo Smoke Q, as in Bar-B-Q. That's what they call it in Kansas City, owner Lance Knowling's hometown. Gone are the water glasses, wine goblets for bring-your-own and waiters. In their place, a counter where you place your order, a community table and a flat-screen TV. Clients are encouraged to BYO beer. Plastic cups provided.

Knowling says it's not a response to several new casual soul-food joints in town, which include the Wood Pit and Ruthie's, but a decision based on the fact that Indigo Smoke has a fancy sit-down restaurant in Maplewood, with a full liquor license, and didn't need two. The proliferation of BBQ in Montclair doesn't faze Knowling, he insists: "Where I come from, there's a bar-b-q restaurant on every corner."

In line with the new casual digs and lower overhead, prices are lower too. A beef brisket sandwich is $9 at Indigo Smoke in Maplewood and just $7.50 in Montclair. A side of whipped sweet potatoes runs $3.75 in Maplewood and $2.50 in Montclair. And you'll get your food - to stay or to go - a lot faster too.

Indigo Smoke Q is at 387 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair. 973.744.3440.

GREAT news imo...the wait staff was the worst thing about Indigo Smoke! If I only have to rely on myself and the kitchen I might just start going again. Great chef, great food, but the S L O W E S T staff in town has kept us away for a while. Looking forward to going back!

I already posted this on the regular indigo page, so I"m sorry for the repost... But I'm curious about other people's experiences in the new "improved" Indigo smoke Q.

My husband and I frequent Indigo Smoke, and would rave about it frequently to anyone who'd listen. Ready to see what their new menu and remodeled space had to offer, we eagerly got take-out this evening. After a long week, we figured we deserved a little comfort food!

Well we were a little worried when we noticed that their new menu was lacking a few favorites... pull-apart bread, their great fried chicken, amongst other items. Undeterred, however, we ordered barbeque chicken, beef brisket, their heavenly fries and a new item, whipped sweet potatoes. Unfortunately, we opened the containers to find our chicken a bit overcooked, heavy sweet potatoes, a smaller portion of brisket (covered in sliced pickles, nonetheless.... seriously?), and the ultimate disappointment... their delicious, home cut potato wedges have been replaced with crinkle cut, unseasoned, supermarket french fries. Blasphemy!

We're hopeful that this is all attributable to grand re-opening drama.... that their best chef had the night off, that their potato order got lost in Newark somewhere, only to be replaced with a frozen alternative out of pure desperation. But for now, I think we'll wait a while before we return...

Met a couple of friends there last night. I was a little confused at first because I was waiting for the waitress to take my order. My friends finally decided to clue me in that I had to go up to the counter. I order the beef brisket sandwich with fries and cole slaw. The food was great and I liked the set up. A lot more casual than when I was last there which was a couple of years ago. They don't allow substitutions as I wanted mac and cheese in place of the fries but that was minor "negative" for me. I look forward to go back there with my other friends in the future.

I agree this is awesome. the service was the worst thing about this place. the food and atmosphere were great but the staff was untrained and inattentive. great move by the owners. can't wait to return.

I think it's a great concept, the space is comfortable and I like the idea of self serve. It is a little confusing at first if you've been there before they re-modeled, but the food was great. The apple pie I had for dessert was incredible. The community table in the middle of the restaurant is a great idea.
Ruthie's isn't in the same ballpark with Indigo.

well this stinks... gonna have to move to maplewood... Does Maplewood have a baristanet?

The Wood Pit has long since earned my loyalty... sorry, Indigo!

Indigo's food is ok but the service was VERY slow and not many people there. There is no atmosphere. If you use a credit card make sure you leave with it. Our card wasn't given back to us and we didn't realize it for a few days. We called for 2 weeks and the card was always "in the mail". We finally had to cancel it - I don't trust those people after that - why did they keep lying?
