There's a brand new energy in the strip mall on Belleville Ave. in Bloomfield, a place known more for being the home of an A&P Supermarket than a gourmet restaurant and swanky nightspot.
Prana, a restaurant, lounge and nightclub, took over the space formerly occupied by Taste. On our visit, we sat on the upper level of the bi-level space, in a booth ensconced in wispy fabric, and were frankly amazed at the transformation. One minute, you're outside, navigating empty shopping carts; the next, you're inside the zen-drenched space with a mystical, exotic atmosphere and fanciful gourmet fusion food to match.
Asian Indian fusion is the cuisine, but the menu (here) is incredibly eclectic and inventive. A group of baristas came and tried a bunch of dishes.

Favorites: crispy duck samosas with a quince dipping sauce; the aforementioned scallop foie, with date puree, lemon frisee salad and pomegranate molasses; and ultra-tender, braised short ribs with Moroccan coucous, cashews and baby carrots. More about the talented chef, Jarrett Bennett, here. The Star Ledger has also visited. One obvious bonus of the location -- plenty of parking.
Desserts (pictured) were top notch. On another night, returning this time lfor drinks and dancing, the place was packed with both diners having late dinners and folks starting to dance and gather at the bar.
Although Prana opened earlier this year, the official grand opening this Thursday, (April 10) from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, get a taste of Prana at happy hour from 5-8 p.m. with half priced drinks and appetizers.
