Finding The Sweet Spot

Wednesday, July 2, 2008

NewBakery.jpg Let's admit a well-known Baristaville truism: Gina's Paneficio - Montclair's artisanal bakery of sweet treats and European style breads - is a winner. The Walters' family-owned business has been satisfying our carb cravings for 11 years with handcrafted, minimally processed baked goods. Not astonishing, then, that during the holidays loyal customers line up around the block to take home fresh fruit pies, tortes, impossibly rich Buche de Noel, and the famous double-corn & jalapeno mini muffins. So why am I writing about Gina's? Because there's something new, improved, and grown up at their Walnut Street boutique.

They just completed a welcoming makeover - you'll find walls painted bright, the display case turned around - making room for bistro tables and chairs. There's a wall of blackboard and chalk at the ready to amuse kids while nibbling cupcakes and cookies.

pies.jpgA new cafe menu means you can (finally!) order your favorite pies, cakes and tortes by the slice. And if you aren't familiar with Gina's comfort-food - treat yourself to a buttery almond crusted brioche or banana chocolate chunk bread pudding with a coffee, tea, or fresh fruit smoothie. Savory additions to the menu include a variety of paninis on toasted french brioche ($3.00) and pizettas ($6.00) which set a new standard for focaccia. With seven varieties of pizettas (big enough to share) you can't miss. The caramelized shallot with goat cheese was a huge kid pleaser; we ordered our greens, enjoying spinach, cheese, and potato topping a crisp, airy underpinning of focaccia.Pizettas.jpg

Gina's has new evening hours. Thursday, Friday and Saturday they'll serve drinks and dessert until 11 pm, inside, or at the sidewalk tables, sprinkle-proof under a protective awning.

Finally, Gina's has changed her name. Forget Paneficio, it's now Gina's Bakery. Simple, and simply delicious. Gina's Bakery, 110 Walnut Street, Montclair. 973-233-1010. Closed Monday.

Well, as long as he continues to make those cream cheese jalapeno corn muffins, I don't care what he thinks. I mean, I'm all for supporting like-minded people, but those muffins...oh, those muffins...

Posted by Dog Mom | July 2, 2008 2:49 PM

What a ridiculous comment to make in regards to a story about baked goods. One's politcal views have nothing to do with cooking ability. Go push your views under a story that has something to do with politics and leave Gina's alone. That bakery is a great asset to the community.

Posted by Rexem | July 2, 2008 2:53 PM

The story is about stuff for sale. I wasn't talking about the stuff. I was talking about not giving money to the seller.

Posted by User Name | July 2, 2008 3:28 PM

Rexem- your comment is the one that is ridiculous.

Some of us don't support those who support the war. Life is about politics!

I'm sure that there are other bakeries that make those cream cheese jalapeno corn muffins just as well.

Posted by HidingInBaristaville | July 2, 2008 3:44 PM

I'm a Democrat and opposed to the war, but I'll have to practice my politics elsewhere because their baked good are too good to pass up. I'll make myself feel better by knowing I'm supporting a locally-owned business.

Posted by fyi | July 2, 2008 3:49 PM

Hiding & User: Go hump on someone else's leg and leave Rexem alone. Did you yourselves hear the owner say said comment? Don't propagate rumors unless you can prove them. Nuff said.

The food at Gina's is great! I recommend the blueberry or peach pie, they are both fantastic.

And I hope the owner is reading this - I love your food, but am somewhat freaked that you leave all of your baked goods exposed on the counter. It's kind of gross and does not seem sanitary. I'd love to buy more, but can't bring myself to buy anything that's not wrapped and kept away from the general public. I've seen children finger the stuff, and money gets exchanged over it, with all sorts of pocket lint floating around. I thought when you renovated, you'd fix this - but you didn't! Please do so I can enjoy more of what you sell.

Posted by Maddingo | July 2, 2008 4:05 PM

Baked goods should be under cover, I agree. Sounds gross to have them out in the open with yucky kid germs. Blech. Health code violation?

Try the Bread Company

Posted by Iris | July 2, 2008 6:10 PM

Four words:
Jalapeno Corn Muffins.
Brioche.

Both are THE best in the area!

Posted by I'm ME | July 2, 2008 9:01 PM

I tried the Bread Company and nearly cracked a tooth! And that on a sample no less. I never went in there again. If you offer dried out samples what sort of message are you sending?

Gina's bread is the best! Sometimes I wish they'd try different types of bread. Maybe rotate them to expand the menu.

I'm looking for someone to replicate the Crocodillo (Italian for crocodile) bread I had at DDL Foodshow in Manhattan about 20 years ago!

And the chocolate dipped coconut macaroons are amazing! Get them when they make them!

Hi all! I'm an insider at Gina's Bakery, and I've good news for those of you who are rightfully disconcerted regarding the lack of a "sneeze guard." Actually, the sneeze guard was slated to coincide with the completion of the recent storefront renovations. In fact, the vendor arrived for installation one morning almost two weeks ago. The problem was, the vendor came with a custom-made guard that was incorrectly designed with too many metal posts - posts that were suitable for a longer and wider counter top, and at Gina's essentially created a type of "fortress" where it would appear that the workers were behind bars, and substantially blocked the view of the products on display. Gina's Bakery refused the installation, and requested a proper sneeze guard be supplied. It is my understanding that the sneeze guard is coming within one week, possibly two.

I am really pleased to see that Barista has a sound policy of removing inappropriate comments that go well beyond criticism of an establishment's product, service, or related conduct.

Unfortunately, the person who chose to post a political comment based entirely on hearsay, thus initiating an irresponsible rumor that has nothing at all to do with Gina's Bakery products - may have already caused the bakery and thus its employees harm, and that is a true shame.

I would also ask the question: Who is this "owner" who is the unwitting subject of the political comments? Because there is only one owner and proprietor, Mr. Gene Walters. Food for thought!

I respectfully ask people to judge Gina's based on the fact that their goods are actually handmade, and not only handmade, but made using only the highest quality ingredients. Gene Walters is dedicated to doing things the old-fashioned way, because he truly believes that there's art in baking, art in creating delicious, high quality foods that were made with care.

I'm an insider (not an employee), but knowing what I know firsthand, I sincerely think this place is a gem. Thus my passion. It is pretty rare indeed to find breads made entirely without oils and other unsavory substances, and painstakingly by hand. The same with the goodies! It's very difficult...and expensive, especially with the continually steepening cost of good ingredients.

Give Gina's Bakery a try!

:-)

So, Insider: you tell us: is Mr. Gene Walters a Republican who supports the 'war' in Iraq or not?

Posted by User Name | July 3, 2008 10:19 PM

Is it legal to operate a bakery with no sneeze guard?

Jeez, even Charlie Brown's has a sneeze guard.

"Unfortunately, the person who chose to post a political comment based entirely on hearsay, thus initiating an irresponsible rumor that has nothing at all to do with Gina's Bakery products - may have already caused the bakery and thus its employees harm, and that is a true shame."

Ah, so you realize that lots of people in this area will not purchase products from a Republican who is for the war and that talking politics in your store may cause a loss of business.

A lot of us live our politics. We recycle, compost, try to reduce the amount that we purchase, live green, contribute to politicians that have like views.

Posted by HidingInBaristaville | July 4, 2008 7:57 AM

So, now it's against Baristanet policy to say that someone is a Republican and that they were heard to state publicly that the were for the WAR?

Posted by HidingInBaristaville | July 4, 2008 11:19 AM

they will do fine, republican or not...let it go people

Posted by pjt | July 4, 2008 11:45 AM

Let the WAR go? WHY????

Posted by HidingInBaristaville | July 4, 2008 12:23 PM

Hello everyone this Jared the General Manager of Gina's...I should visit this sight more often! I was not aware and shocked to see the resent posts on our political views! We at Gina's do not openly support or protest the war and do our best to keep politics to a minimum. We do however support our troops and wish all their safe return as soon as possible! And F.Y.I? I would NEVER use the word ?Republican? and Gene in the same sentence! I?m saddened to see some people would black list an eatery based on ones political views?. This is still America right? Thank you all who support our bakeries attempts to bring the finest baked goods to our fellow Montclairians.

Posted by jban123 | July 5, 2008 5:42 PM

Yes, this is still America and I have the right to pick where I spend my dollars!

Posted by HidingInBaristaville | July 5, 2008 8:59 PM

In addition to a health department inspector, do we we need a PC inspector to make sure that we don't consume food from those people with "improper" political beliefs? This job shouldn't be so hard, since all that seems to be required to be found "guilty" is some innuendo from an anonymous source.

Although I often pass by here while walking home from the Farmer's Market, I have never stopped in. The double-corn & jalape?o mini muffins sound like something that would go great with a Saturday evening barbecue or a Sunday morning breakfast, so I will have to stop by next week.

Posted by BitPusher | July 6, 2008 2:48 PM

Pusher-man: This whole site is built around innuendos from anonymous sources!

i love all the drama surrounding this bakery. now i definitely want to stop in!

We go to the Bread Company when we want to be healthy and Gina's when we want the most delicious baked goods in our area. Seriously though, we go for one thing and leave with ten other random baked items. So good, so good.

and i moved to montclair because i thought it was one of the more tolerant burbs? you want to live in a place where everyone's just like you? so tickytacky.

Posted by sub-urban | July 16, 2008 12:34 PM

Gina's is the best local bakery around, bar none. The pies are superb, the brioche is sublime and the jalepeno corn muffins rock. I am always suspicious about rumors spread on this site, but regardless, I would buy their baked goods if Mussolini was working the kitchen.
