Le Baker's Dozen

Saturday, November 29, 2008

For weeks, the storefront teased commuters and passersby on Bellevue with giant photos of chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes. Yesterday, on the way back from seeing Bolt, we found Le Baker's Dozen had quietly opened for a test run; today (Saturday) is the official open. On the menu, cookies, cakes and pies, scones and cupcakes and other baked goods, including many vegan offerings. Tasters gave the cupcakes a thumbs up. The shop also sells some baking mixes, jams, cookie cutters and other items, giving it a country store vibe. Open 7:30 a.m. every day except Monday; drop in today and sample some mini-cupcakes.

Does the menu on their Web site really say $60 for a chocolate layer cake, $25 for an apple pie, and $2 for a cupcake? Yikes! It's a hard time to open any business, even worse time to open one that depends on people who don't care what they spend.

agree with the above comment. i got something from the shop the other day and it was reasonably good. $2 for a cupcake seems okay as long as there is a discount for larger quantities. but i would strongly suggest they reconsider their prices for the cakes and pies. otherwise this small business will not be lasting very long.

I stopped in over the weekend and I don't think their prices are off from other bakeries - have you guys been other places lately? I know the pies from Gina's are $20 and the cupcakes are $3 a piece, and my friend got a single tier cake for her daughter from Flourpatch Bakery a few months ago - $48 for a 6" cake! That's her money to spend, but yikes. (Their designs are cute though) Fresh baked goods from a non-chain store aren't cheap anywhere, that's all I'm saying...

Anyway I enjoyed my cupcake from LBD a lot, I don't know what's in the icing but it's delicious. The toffee is also really good. The family that is running it is really friendly, and Liz is right, it does kind of have a homey country store vibe.

Prices are going up, up, up on anything made with flour. From pizza to bagels to cakes and pies. There have been huge increases in the costs of many ingredients.

Nice staff and amazing scones. Amazing. Huge, fluffy, flavor in every bite. They are also very nice and helpful, and will open a few minutes early if they see you outside on the way to the train - and speed your order so you can make it. They have been open to suggestions and ideas, and I find the prices (as far as breakfast items) no different than anything else I'd buy on my way to work.

The tiny cupcake samples are also the best butter cream icing I've ever had - love it! Yum. It's nice after walking by the photo of the giant cupcake every day to find the taste measured up to what I had imagined.

I had a delicious scone there. The girl was so nice she let me leave and go to the bank and come back to pay 1/2 hour later (my husband had emptied my wallet.)

I've paid $3.95 for the custom cupcakes at Whole Foods, so there prices don't seem out of line for Upper Montclair. Especially when you consider Coldstone Creamery charges over that for a scoop of ice cream and actually charges separately for the cone!!! And the girls who work there are totally snotty. As if $6 for one scoop and 2 mix-ins is perfectly reasonable!

We only went on opening day, and the owners/operators seemed really nice and earnest. The cupcakes were okay. The cookies were good, but not better than Whole Foods or even the cookies at The Restaurant Formerly Known as The Cheese Shop. Someone came in asking about fresh break and the help seemed sweetly bewildered: Bread? At a bakery? Frankly, I think the inquisitive customer was onto something. Who needs/wants cookies and cupcakes right now, when so many others DO this already? Give us something different and interesting!
