Show Your Jersey Love

Jersey LoveA group called Social Media Moms is holding its inaugural retreat this June in Atlantic City. On its website, the group–a collection of tweeting, blogging, social media-utilizing moms–says it chose Atlantic City “to help NJ restore its revenue by showing the world that Sandy may have damaged it, but it is still alive and kicking.”

Today the group is celebrating New Jersey on Twitter with the hashtag #jerseylove. New Jerseyans past and present are taking to Twitter to proclaim their love for all things New Jersey, such as the shore, the pick-your-own farms and the blueberry wine (who knew? I didn’t).

As a five-year resident of New Jersey, I still have not seen much of the state, including the famous shore. But I have found much here to love: the beautiful old towns like Montclair and Maplewood, the fresh corn and tomatoes in summer (and our own lovely farmers’ market), the great parks and recreation areas, the beautiful rolling hills of Hunterdon County, the many interesting characters that populate this state. There is still much more for me to see and learn about Jersey.

How long have you been in New Jersey, and what do you love about it?

Whenever I need my fix of nature and tranquility I know Anderson Park’s trees, plants, flowers and fields are there for me.   Last Thursday evening, Lisanne Renner, historian and program director for The Friends of Anderson Park, a non-profit conservancy that partners with the Essex County Park System to maintain and beautify the space, shared the park’s history and features that make it so special.  The talk was the last in a series of lectures presented by the Friends of Bellevue Avenue Library (more presentations to come in February/March 2013.)

In 1903, Charles Anderson, Montclair resident, insurance executive (he sold life insurance policies to three Standard Oil presidents), commuter, local real estate developer/owner who is credited with bringing the Tudor style design to Upper Montclair where he constructed several buildings and philanthropist, and his wife Annie deeded approximately 15 acres of land to Essex County (no one is sure why he wouldn’t donate the land to Montclair, which formed its own park system around 1906.)  After some hesitance due to the cost of creating and maintaining the park, the County accepted the land, and it became part of the Essex County Park Commission system, the nation’s first county-wide park system. Tell BID How You Feel

The Montclair Center Business Improvement District, along with some help from Essex County, was out in Montclair Center Wednesday morning, removing the Winter Snowflake Skyline down from over Bloomfield Avenue. We always love the seasonal display put up by BID, though the snowflakes seemed a bit lonely this year without much real snowfall to go with it.

Snowflakes safely stored until next year, BID is now asking for your thoughts on Montclair Center. The organization has set up an online survey seeking input from Montclair Center customers and stakeholders.

BID is trying to get a comprehensive look at how different constituents view Montclair Center and solicit suggestions to make it better. The survey takes about ten minutes, and those who complete it can enter a drawing for a $100 gift certificate for Montclair Center. To begin the survey, click here.

Update 7:51 Mounties score another one at the beginning of the 4th: now leading Bengals 51-7.

Update: Bengals intercepted the ball 7:27 into the 2nd quarter and scored. The score now Mounties 28, Bengals 7.

Doreen Sarcone is at Foley Field sending pictures and news from the big Montclair v. Bloomfield game. The undefeated Montclair team, which scored almost immediately, now leads 21 to 0 with just a few minutes left in the first quarter.

The weather cooperated for the 6 p.m. kickoff. Teams are playing for the Investors Bank Cup and the MVP from each team will get a $500 scholarship.

The Thanksgiving rivalry, which usually takes place on the morning of Thanksgiving Day, has gone on for 80 years. All photos by Doreen Sarcone, reporting live from Foley Field.

THANK GOD! Though I have admit that I really, really liked the bands that Bowery brought in... Let's hope it won't be too pop-centered with LiveNation.
