Not A McMansion

2375774We're talking the real deal here...a circa 1930, 23 room English Manor.  You'll recognize the Stonebridge Road estate as last spring's Decorator Showhouse.  Now, it can be yours, for a mere $4.250 million. The two and a half acre property has been spiffed up, inside and out. When we visited, we loved the huge iron fountain, towering oaks and flowering perennials in the resort-like back yard.  Bonus showhouse left-overs you'll get: a new bathroom (there are 5 more), new kitchen, a craft room, large media room, fantastic wall finishes, and the comfort of knowing you can entertain 500+ guests comfortably in your own home.  With nine bedrooms and a two bedroom apartment with kitchen, dining and living room over the four car garage, you won't be making reservations at Hotel Caliplofker. For more information, click here.

You think it's nice, but not your dream house?  Tell us, if money were no object, which house on what street of Baristaville would be yours?

Almost any house on Oakwood in Montclair. Love that street!

There's a new house under construction at S. Mt. side of Stonebridge - just down the road from the showhouse mansion.

Has a nice sketch in front of what the final home will look like.

To me, it seems to blend in nicely with the other huge homes in that area.

Why can't Montclair make everyone building something new design them like this so they fit in to the neighborhood?

My favoritest house of all is on the East side of Park Street between Gordonhurst and Wildwood - a gorgeous home with a lovely porch, on what looks to be a double-sized lot, with the most beautiful perennial gardens I have ever seen. I go out of my way to drive by it just to see what the garden is up to. Bravo to the homeowner!

I am grateful to say that my favorite house in Montclair is my own. Late 1800's, lots of original chestnut and oak trim, with high ceilings, lots of space and rock-solid construction that should last for centuries. There's a large lot, with a backyard that makes me feel I'm on vacation.

Since you said "as if money were no object" for this particular fantasy, I'll pretend the mortgage and taxes have magically vanished! What a beautiful thing!

There are lots of great homes in this town. I loved the back yard and huge trees at Brookwood.

I'm saddened to say that my house is my least favorite house in Montclair. Early 1900's, lots of creaks, pitted chestnut trim, dreary, and could fall apart at any moment. Seriously. When squirrels run on my roof, I run for cover in fear that the whole damn thing's coming down.
Plus, my lot is tiny, and the backyard makes me feel I'm on a vacation at Guantanamo.

Plus, this town is in New Jersey...the most vile state in the country.

You white folks love old construction, yet you avoid living in tepees. What a bunch of phoneys.

Can somone explain this Montclair real estate anomaly to me?

see link below:

How can ASI value this property at FMV for $1,499,000 a/o 10/1/06 and it lists for $2,150,000 5 months later in a softer market! Either ASI and town assessor are leaving "a lot on the table" in terms of fair taxes or the property is grossly overpriced for the market. I'd like to see a discussion from local realtors and the town assessor/ASI on how this type of discrepany happens?
