National Peace Officers Memorial DayThe Montclair Township Police Department is flying the flag at half-staff today in observance of National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

The Montclair Police Department lost two officers in the 1970s. Sergeant Alfred L. Sellick, Jr. lost his life on January 12, 1976 while trying to disarm a gunman during a bank robbery. Patrolman Raymond T. Busterda died September 29, 1972 when he was struck by a vehicle while on a traffic post directing traffic.

Visit the Montclair Police Department’s Officer Down memorial page to honor Montclair’s fallen and to leave a reflection.

Pedestrian Safety Initiative: Undercover Cops In Crosswalks

BY  |  Tuesday, May 14, 2013 8:03am  |  COMMENTS (27)

crosswalk at nightWe have a serious problem with pedestrian safety in our area. Forty-five pedestrians have been killed on roads in Essex County since 2011. In Montclair alone, drivers hit pedestrians–some of them in crosswalks–in OctoberMarch, April, and May, resulting in two deaths.

In response, police departments throughout the county are attempting to curb dangerous driving by going undercover to carry out pedestrian crosswalk stings.

Officers from Montclair, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, East Orange and Newark police departments were deployed yesterday to act as pedestrians on the Bloomfield Avenue corridor. The well traveled road is the site of many accidents–including one of the recent pedestrian fatalities in Montclair. Drivers who failed to yield to the undercover officers in the crosswalk were stopped and either warned or ticketed by uniformed officers a short distance away. Normally, motorists violating the pedestrian law face a $100 fine, plus court costs and fees, and two points on their driving record. Continue Reading

I really really hope Wellmont stays. I've seen over 40 shows here (no joke) and most of them were great. Along with the Montclair Film Festival, we need the Wellmont here to keep Montclair as relevant as ever.
