Baristanet: Over 15 Million Served!

BY  |  Monday, Jan 30, 2012 10:17am  |  COMMENTS (16)

A little over two years ago, Baristanet passed the 10 million visits marker. Over the weekend, I noticed another significant number: we had just passed 15 million visits to the site. (That’s 34.4 million pageviews!)

It’s hard to believe that in May 2004, when we first started publishing Baristanet, the idea of getting local news online, in a timely fashion, was utterly novel. The Montclair Times barely used its website in those days, saving all its content for Thursdays. And Patch did not exist. When Scot Surbeck sent us this photo of a car fire in Watchung Plaza in 2005, and we published it the same day, people found that timeliness extraordinary. Now it’s expected. And we’ll get scolded if one of our competitors has it first.

But it’s not just news that we do at Baristanet. We think that in 2004, we started a conversation that has been humming along ever since. Continue Reading

Window Wonderland!

We had fun tromping around for store to store in Santa hats, nibbling at cookies and sipping hot cocoa, cider and glogg, and meeting all the wonderful shopkeepers who put so much creativity into their holiday windows. And though we missed the Santa-saurus, we heard it was the hit of Church Street, and our friend Matt Frankel sent us a video.

You still have time to vote for your favorites — and win some great prizes just for telling us who you voted for and why! See a slideshow after the jump.

While many predicted that the rise of the Internet, and the growing popularity of social media, would mean the end of civilization, events continue to tell a different story.

From the global uprisings promoting democracy in ways heretofore unachievable, to its role in education and political literacy, we are seeing enormous benefit throughout our daily lives.

And closer to home we see what “social media” can do. In an emergency, like Irene. Continue Reading

Nick Baldwin: What Happened to the American Dream?

BY  |  Friday, Jul 08, 2011 11:24am  |  COMMENTS (89)

Think back to the 1950′s. Okay, well, if you’re like me you weren’t born yet, so at least try and imagine what is was like when our parents’ parents were purchasing their first home. The thought of selling it in 10, 20, or even 50 years, and then making a profit didn’t even enter their minds. No, they were buying this new home to start a family, make memories, and to grow old in. Today, the idea of home-buying has changed drastically. The definition of “The American Dream” is not what it once was. But in today’s housing market where prices keep falling, buyers are afraid that their home purchase will lose value the way a new car does when you drive it off the lot. The way Americans view their homes has changed.

The reason I decided to write this blog entry is because recently my wife, Anne, and I went to visit my grandmother, Tanya, in Rochester, NY. She has lived in the the same house for over 50 years. She and my grandfather Hyam Plutzik, who is no longer with us, were newlyweds when they purchased the 3BR/2 bathroom, California style ranchhome for $17,300. Back then, that was a hefty amount. The California ranch was the cutting edge of homes in the 1950′s. It was new construction, and my grandmother is still, to this day, the sole owner.

We want you — yes you — to join us Tuesday night for that great tradition in Baristaville letters. Egans is at 104 Harrison Avenue, near the corner of Harrison, Eagle Rock and Main Street. Come with an appetite and all your political convictions, whatever they may be. If you’re on Facebook, you can see who else is coming, and invite your own gang, here.

Well, there’s High Street to Scotland Road, Gregory to Wyoming or you can take Pleasant Valley to the South Mountain Reservation. Like true explorers, we tried them all and got a big taste of Maplewood, South Orange and Millburn (with a Harold and Kumar side trip to White Castle in Orange). Join us for a little Baristaville road trip.

Welcome to Baristaville!

welcome to baristaville.jpgGood morning, citizens of Maplewood, Millburn and South Orange. No, you’re not lost, though we might have spun you around a little. You clicked on The Local, the New Jersey outpost of The New York Times, and wound up on Baristanet, a website that until now concentrated mainly on the comings and goings of people in Montclair, Bloomfield and Glen Ridge.
We now pronounce you denizens of Baristaville!

Hold Tight, Baristanet Commenters

Wednesday, May 26, 2010 12:43pm  |  COMMENTS (0)

Clearly it is not a typical day in Baristaville when there are only three new comments on the page. We’ve been experiencing some technical difficulties since Monday, and we think we’ve found the source. But while we tinker on the back end, some functionality is gone. Your comments are always important to us, and we’ll be back and full-speed soon. Meanwhile if you’re one of our 876 Facebook fans, feel free to go over to our Facebook page and talk all you want.

Baristanet’s New Features

Monday, Feb 15, 2010 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (12)

inside baristanet.jpgYou’ve probably noticed a new look on Baristanet today. We have a new tab, “Inside Baristanet,” with the latest headlines from all of our inside pages. In addition to Barista Kids, Food and Real Estate, we’re officially launching Barista Pets, which will be run by long-term Baristanet reader Martta Rose Kelly with help from contributor Sue Kasdon. You can reach them, and report lost or found pets, at pets@baristanet.com.
In addition to these pages, we’d like to direct your attention to two new tabs on our top-page navigation. See-Click-Fix is a tool created by web developers in New Haven to allow citizens anywhere to report non-emergency issues, like potholes and broken streetlights. We’re also linking to MyVeronaNJ to provide you locally-based coverage of that town. You’ve already seen some of their stories on the demise of the climbing tree in Verona Park and pocketbook poachers. We hope you’ll keep checking them out.

Perhaps yesterday's heavy police presence would have been better applied to Mission Street than to the Montclair State campus.
