Guess Who Called This Weekend?

Monday, Nov 02, 2009 10:27am  |  COMMENTS (46)

Oh, what an exciting weekend in the Barista house! Turns out we’re on the speed dial of a certain former President, who just wanted to remind us to vote for Jon Corzine on Tuesday. And heck, Dick Codey, Planned Parenthood, the AFL-CIO and a couple of other unions put in a good word for Corzine too. This could be the weekend that marked the official end of our family’s use of a land line. The only people who ever call it are robots. Well, and our parents.
In other last-minute election news…

Here Comes Bubba

We’re just warning you. It may not be the best idea to plan your Whole Foods West Orange shopping trip for 8 pm tomorrow night.
President Clinton stumps for Gov. Corzine Tuesday night, first at a $200-a-plate dinner at Mayfair Farms in West Orange, then at a rally at the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Hall in Little Falls. That’s a straight shot down Prospect Avenue to Pompton Ave., which is often a traffic nightmare even without former presidents in limos.

Gov. Corzine Discusses New Stimulus Benefits at Montclair State

Gov. Jon Corzine spoke at a press conference held at Montclair State University yesterday afternoon to discuss the benefits of the new economic stimulus legislation for college campuses.
The legislation, which Corzine signed on Monday, now allows private developers to construct facilities on colleges and universities using a public-private partnership. It will also allow campuses more grants for campus development.
“Using the forward-looking and creative methodologies made possible by the Stimulus Act, Montclair State University will immediately partner with a private developer to provide a minimum of 1,200 beds on campus, with associated dining service and parking opportunities,” President Susan A. Cole said.
The press conference was held in front of Bohn Hall, a dormitory built in 1972 designed to house 588 students. President Cole explained Bohn Hall will house 703 students this fall, at 120 percent capacity. Students from MSU and Kean University stood behind the podium holding up signs that said, “Thanks for more beds” and “Beds for heads.”
“If we make this kind of investment in beds for heads, like the signs say, and research facilities we create reasons to be in New Jersey and that will go long beyond today,” Gov. Corzine said.
Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo, State Senator Ray Lesniak, State Assemblyman Albert Coutinho and Kean University President Dawood Farahi were in attendance.

Joe D: I’ve Grown Accustomed To His Face

Dog_parkWe are relieved to find out that County Executive Joe DiVincenzo, rumored just yesterday to be Corzine’s pick for Lt. Governor, has said no thank you. Because we have really gotten used to him standing at the podium and opening parks. Especially dog parks. And sometimes wearing hard hats and knocking down insane asylums. All that stuff.
Last week, I served jury duty at the spiffed up Veterans Courthouse, which now has a nice little computer room with wifi for those waiting to be called. And the recently renovated Historic Courthouse, as it is now called, is a sight to behold. However, I have to talk to Joey D. about bringing in a farmer’s market or at least some falafel vendors for the park outside the courthouse because there’s really nothing decent to eat.

Obama v. Christie

Tuesday, Jun 16, 2009 8:59am  |  COMMENTS (49)

turtle back.jpgThe White House is very concerned about Corzine’s sinking reelection campaign and plans to actively help bail water, according to a major story in The Star Ledger today. That’s apparently why Joe Biden was sent up to the skating arena two weeks ago to help kick off Corzine’s campaign. University of Virginia political analyst Larry Sabato says Obama is Corzine’s only hope.

“He will have to be dragged across the finish line by Obama and other major Democrats,” Sabato said. “He doesn’t have the strength himself.”

Any bets, Baristavillians? What’s Obama more likely to accomplish: a Corzine victory or health care reform?

Polls are Open

Tuesday, Jun 02, 2009 8:44am  |  COMMENTS (23)

The NJ gubernatorial primary is today, and if you’re registered as a Democrat or a Republican, you’re eligible to vote. Former Glen Ridge Mayor Carl Bergmanson is on the ballot challenging Corzine. (See our video interview of him here.) On the GOP side, it’s Steve Lonegan v. Chris Christie.
Polls close at 8 pm, which is when Corzine plans to kick off his campaign for governor with a rally at the Richard J. Codey skating arena in West Orange. Joe Biden will be stomping for him at the event.
UPDATE: We received a note from the Corzine campaign telling us that previously unaffiliated voters can vote in today’s election. By casting a vote today, they can become affiliated with a party.

Bergmanson Would Decriminalize Marijuana

Monday, Jun 01, 2009 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (9)

Sure, there’s a 99 percent chance that Gov. Jon Corzine will win the Democratic nomination for governor tomorrow. But challenger Carl Bergmanson, former mayor of Glen Ridge, has just unveiled his last pre-election initiative: decriminalizing marijuana. Maybe that will turn things around.
Bergmanson not only favors passing a medical marijuana law, but decriminalizing its recreational use as well.
“Marijuana prohibition costs us billions of dollars, wastes valuable resources and makes criminals out of otherwise law-abiding citizens,” Bergmanson said. “New Jersey needs to take a more common-sense approach and to stop putting our citizens behind bars for smoking pot.”

Carl Bergmanson Explains His Run

Tuesday, May 05, 2009 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (9)

“Am I the ideal choice to run for governor? Hell no,” admits former Glen Ridge mayor Carl Bergmanson, who is hoping to unseat sitting governor Jon Corzine in the Democratic primary on June 2. “But I knew the Democratic party wasn’t going to run anyone against him. It needed to be done.”
With the support of just 2 percent of registered Democrats, according to an April 22 Quinnipiac poll, Bergmanson’s quixotic campaign will undoubtedly be over on June 3. Almost three months in, Bergmanson is sounding cynical — and convinced that NJ’s Democratic machine is systematically burying all news of his candidacy. We interviewed him in his Glen Ridge home last week, learning (among other things) what a kleptocracy is.

It’s Official: Bergmanson to Challenge Corzine

Tuesday, Feb 17, 2009 10:30am  |  COMMENTS (52)

A few weeks ago, we reported that former Glen Ridge Mayor Carl Bergmanson “expected” to challenge Gov. Jon Corzine in the Democratic primary this year. Now it’s official. Bergmanson announced his candidacy officially on New Jersey 101.5. Phil Read wrote about Bergmanson’s challenge and reviewed his political background in yesterday’s Star Ledger but left this out: Bergmanson had to change his political affiliation from Whig to Democrat to make the run.
Whether Corzine has anything to worry about from Bergmanson, he’s already running scared. Polls now put former US Attorney Chris Christie, who wants to challenge Corzine for the GOP, ahead of the incumbent 44 to 38 percent.

We Love a (Montclair) Parade

Corzine hobbling, BlueWavers and Montclair Republicans, robot builders and tree huggers (oh yeah, that was us.) The Montclair July 4th of July parade is always a bizarro blend of spectacle and politics.
For those of us who *work* the 4th, the cool weather was a real blessing. Thanks to our indefatiguable parade mistress Katie Mancine, who worked into the wee hours of the night sewing leaves onto baseball caps, and to Upper Mountain Landscaping for the loan of the trees and the truck!
Now, Baristavillians, tell us whose float floated your boat!
