BY  |  Friday, Jan 20, 2012 10:28am  |  COMMENTS (3)

Starting Monday, DeCamp Bus Lines will be testing out a new evening service from Wall Street to Baristaville.

DeCamp currently runs a morning service to downtown, and according to the company’s website, the evening service will become permanent if there is sufficient interest.

The company calls the route a “modified #33/#66 routing out to West Caldwell,” with the usual stops at Belluvue Plaza, Watching Plaza and Park Street, and ending at Kirkpatrick Lane in West Caldwell. The fares will be the same as for the regular #33/#66 routes.

The bus will pick up riders at 5:15pm at Battery Park (at Greenwich). To check out other pick-up and drop-off points, see the schedule at left.

NJ Transit is rolling out extra service for the Wednesday pre-Thanksgiving getaway, and adding some extra Friday morning trains for Gotham-bound Black Friday shoppers. But plan carefully if you’re going into the Thanksgiving parade on Thursday by train, because the Montclair-Boonton line will be operating on a weekend schedule. (Other lines will have added trains.)

Conductor Josh Crandall of Clever Commute has also been putting out his own advisories to subscribers, reminding them that this was what it looked like last year: Continue Reading

When Buses Collide (Outside the Lincoln Tunnel)

BY  |  Tuesday, Nov 15, 2011 11:45am  |  COMMENTS (6)

A collision between a DeCamp bus and an NJ Transit bus outside the Lincoln Tunnel earlier today snagged traffic, caused some minor injuries and kept the thumbs of Clever Commuters and others busy as they tweeted and chatted about the incident.

After we put out a tweet to commuters asking for photos, one Baristanet reader, Kelli Curran, obliged — posting several pics on Facebook.

Here are some of the crowdsourced reports on the incident:

Worst. Commute. Ever.

How’s the post-storm commute with NJ Transit trains out of business for the day?

Commuter David Hunt — who sent this photo and headline — summed it up this way:

No train, decamp SRO and just heard from Clev-com 495 is closed due to fire. I have 1 foot square to stand in, claustrophobic, and rt 3 is stop and go near la-roche. Help! Stay home if U can

BY  |  Wednesday, Oct 19, 2011 3:42pm  |  COMMENTS (2)

The 6:40 p.m. DeCamp 66 bus traveling from the city last night was pulled over by police on Rt. 3 for failing to signal a lane change, according to a Clever Commute passenger on board. “We were on our way quickly,” the passenger said. “There’s a very heavy police presence all along Rt. 3, lots of folks being pulled over.”

Baristanet reached out to DeCamp this morning, but have not received a response. Were you on the bus?

Crimes of our Fellow Commuters

Even in these slow commuting days of high-summer, when the number of fellow travelers has dwindled, the process of getting to and from work can still be irritating. After all, exposure to humanity, with all its habits, quirks and things-done-in-public-that-should-best-be-kept-private is sometimes not for the overly sensitized.

One of our readers, a DeCamp commuter, posted this on her Facebook page during rush hour this morning:

“At the bus stop with The Loud Gum Chewer, a 60-ish man who chews gum with his mouth open. Could be worse…I could be married to him.”

It got a lot of “LOL’s” from her friends, and for me, conjured up memories of all sorts of unpleasant behaviors I’ve witnessed during past commutes.

We wonder who are the worst offenders in your day, and what they do that really bugs you. Do tell…

DeCamp Fares on the Rise

In the first fare increase since December 12, 2008 DeCamp Bus Lines has raised its ticket prices, effective Monday, February 14. Fare tables are posted on the buses and on the web site, (although the header still indicates the 2008 rates, they are in fact updated).

Josh Crandall — Mr. Clever Commute himself — notified us of this change yesterday, based on a tip from one of his subscribers. Continue Reading

DeCamp Service to Resume on Wednesday

BY  |  Saturday, Sep 11, 2010 6:41pm  |  COMMENTS (10)

Larry Hanley, international vice president of the Amalgamated Transit Union and chief negotiator for striking DeCamp bus drivers, has texted Baristanet to tell us that Assemblyman Thomas Giblin has brokered a deal that will have drivers going back to work.

DeCamp has just updated its website with the news:

DeCamp Bus Lines and the union representing the drivers, mechanics and cleaners have agreed to a cooling off period. DeCamp commuter service will resume on Wednesday September 15, 2010. DeCamp Bus Lines apologizes for the inconvenience this problem has caused commuters. We thank all our passengers for their understanding during this difficult time.

According to Hanley, Giblin negotiated an indefinite “cooling off period” and a “return to work.”

DeCamp Strikers Rally: $12,000, Groceries And Call For Cool

BY  |  Friday, Sep 10, 2010 3:04pm  |  COMMENTS (26)

At a rally today in support of striking DeCamp employees, Assemblyman Thomas P. Giblin told strikers that he has met with DeCamp’s Gary Pard and they are “working to develop a consensus to get the drivers back to work.” Giblin adds that they are hammering out a contract so DeCamp doesn’t lose riders, but he asked that cooler heads prevail.

At the rally, Giblin presented ATUofficials, Larry Hanley, International VP, and John Costa, State Business Agent, ATU NJ Joint Council, with a check in support of striking DeCamp drivers. Some $12,000 was raised at rally. Groceries were also distributed to the 105 strikers at the rally donated by various unions; Councilman Ray Greaves (pictured with Hanley, Costa and Giblin) was also at the rally.

The big issue for strikers is the loss of their pensions and that they have been working without a contract since last year. DeCamp froze this defined benefit: Continue Reading
