Jean Public: Stop The Deer Slaughter in Essex County

BY  |  Wednesday, Dec 14, 2011 12:55pm  |  COMMENTS (30)

The deer slaughter at South Mountain, Hilltop, etc. should be stopped. It is costing taxpayers $500,000 so far. Hardly cheap. We need to co-exist with these animals, whose homes we have brutally developed. The reasons given for killing have no foundation in truth. Killing the deer is all about money for the NJ Div fish & game. Lyme ticks are on all animals and birds so to blame deer for lyme ticks makes no sense, particularly when the mouse is the prime carrier of the ticks. Vegetation in the forest is such a scam. Fact is with the acid rain, mercury, coal ash, lead, toxic chemical pesticides like rodeo, etc., hordes of people using the open space and taking home plants, bushes, etc. Invasive exotic vegetation less sunshine and climate change, (along with hundreds of other factors), what is happening to vegetation in our forests is extreme, but it isnt caused by the deer. It is caused by man, the ultimate predator. As for deer accidents, I have seen deer by the side of the road considering whether it is safe to cross. I also have seen hundreds of fevered drivers driving 60 mph on 25 mph streets. Nothing can escape being hit at that rate, and the pictures of cars ending up hitting second stories of houses, hitting poles, hitting store fronts are all an indication of the horrific speeding that is going on by residents always in a rush. They are always late. They talk on their cellphones and don’t watch the road or pedestrians crossing either. They can’t even stop from hitting the cars in front of them, which is their responsibility. So, lets give the deer a break. They dont deserve the brutality and abuse and murder that is being pushed on them.

McLoone’s Brings Lakeside Dining to Essex County

This ain’t no dinky county park hotdog stand. McLoone’s Boathouse, a 12,000-square foot restaurant adjacent to Essex County’s miniGolf Safari, is the kind of place where you’ll want to go for Mother’s Day brunch, have drinks with your office mates, take your family for dinner on Sunday nights… and possibly plan to have your daughter’s wedding. Built for $4 million, the massive structure, designed to look like a rustic boathouse, with views of the Orange Reservoir, is owned by Essex County and is accepting reservations for dining starting this Friday, Oct. 21. It’s a marvel of a place, with big stone gas-lit fireplaces, water views, dramatic blue lighting and outdoor seating — and it feels more like a very nice restaurant somewhere in the Adirondacks than a place to accommodate families who’ve been mini-golfing, visiting the Turtle Back Zoo or ice skating at the Codey Arena.

McLoone’s Restaurants is the concessionaire and will pay the county $22,500 in rent per month. It has the concession for 15 years with two additional five-year options. The arrangement is similar to that of the Highlawn Pavilion in Eagle Rock Reservation, which is also owned by the county.

Connect the Dots: Politics Behind Essex County Detention Center Bid

BY  |  Friday, Jul 29, 2011 9:00am  |  COMMENTS (3)

Essex County Executive Joe DiVincenzo and Gov. Chris Christie have something in common: Community Education Centers (CEC).

The New York Times reports both men have connections to the company. DiVincenzo received more than $30,000 in campaign donations from Community Education Centers and Christie’s former law partner and mentor is William Palatucci, the company’s senior VP.

According to the Times, Community Education Centers appears to be the favorite for a multi-million dollar contract to run a 450-bed immigrant detention center. CEC was advertising for jobs related to a new detention center before the contract had been officially awarded (the deadline for bids was yesterday). A crowd gathered at the first-ever Essex County Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) Pride Month Celebration raised their voices together and belted out Bob Marley’s classic hit “One Love.” Held yesterday, June 21, at the Hall of Records in Newark, the event was the latest addition to the year-long schedule of cultural heritage celebrations hosted by the County Executive, Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. The goal of all the celebrations is to raise awareness about the diversity of Essex County’s population.

Yesterday’s event was full of high spirits and inspirational speeches from Assembly Speaker, Shelia Oliver, New Jersey State Senator and Deputy Chief of Staff, Teresa Ruiz, and more. Acknowledged during the ceremony were the members of the LGBTQ Advisory Board for their continued work, dedication, and passion in raising public consciousness in the community. Three notable Essex County citizens, Reverend Janyce L. Jackson, Dr. Joseph A. Putrino Jr., and June E. Dowell-Burton, were presented with the Star of Essex County Award by the County Executive for their extensive strides in awareness for the LGBTQ community. Continue Reading

County’s Gang Members Live in Baristaville

BY  |  Friday, Feb 04, 2011 12:11pm  |  COMMENTS (9)

Gang members aren’t living only in our urban townships, but right here in Baristaville, in almost all of our eastern municipalities (see chart below).

According to Gangs in New Jersey: Municipal Law Enforcement Response to the 2010 NJSP Gang Survey — a recently-released report from the New Jersey State Police — there are more than 166 gangs in Essex County, which make up 11% of the state’s total gang population. This figure places Essex at the top of the nine counties in NJ that reported 90 or more groups.

While the mere mention of local gang activity is enough to bring to mind horrors like drive-by shootings and vicious initiation challenges, the 2010 survey revealed that few gangs currently engage in dramatic or violent crime, extremist political ideologies or are connected to extremist organizations. It’s reported that while gangs take part in a wide variety of crimes on school property, the most common gang activity was the display of gang clothing and signs. Continue Reading

Perhaps yesterday's heavy police presence would have been better applied to Mission Street than to the Montclair State campus.
