FINAL-COLLECTING-ART-350-pixelsThe Montclair Art Museum will hold its fourth juried fair, “Collecting Art: An Affordable Art Fair,” on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 in MAM’s Leir Hall.

Local artists will offer their works for prices under $500 to promote affordable collecting of contemporary art. Admission is free and MAM will offer half price admission to the Museum’s galleries on those days.

This year, a panel including Ilana Stollman, manager of retail and rental operations at MAM, and Scott Gordley, professor of fine arts at Montclair State University, reviewed over 100 applications. The artists represent a diverse group in both style and geography. From Maplewood resident Laura Gilkey’s abstract, otherworldly clay and felt sculptures to Pauline Chernichaw’s gritty, colorful photographs, to Rita Flores’ multimedia portraits, the works featured in Collecting Art will offer something to meet every aesthetic. The exhibiting artists–including Alexa Garbarino, Dana DiMuro and Joseph Haag from Montclair–are from towns across New Jersey, as well as New York and Massachusetts. Continue Reading

Saturday, May 18, 2013 8:57pm  |  COMMENTS (29)

“You’ll be missed.”

That is the heartbreaking message on balloons at a tribute memorial at Canterbury Park in Montclair, in the spot where Shanae Howard and Brandon Brown were found, both fatally shot, in what has been determined to be a murder/suicide. The candles still flickered late this afternoon; a police car was stationed nearby in the park.

A Fourth Ward Collaborative meeting, already scheduled for this coming Tuesday, May 21st, will now focus on the tragic incident, says councilor Renee Baskerville, in an email to Fourth Ward residents. Baskerville writes…

Candles, balloons and a teddy bear create a memorial at bench where Shanae Howard and Brandon Brown, were found, both fatally shot, in Canterbury Park.

Help Montclair SCAC Reach Out to Seniors

BY  |  Friday, May 17, 2013 1:08pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

SCAC surveyThe Montclair Senior Citizens Advisory Committee in partnership with Partners for Health has developed a survey targeting the over-55 population (yes, if you are over 55, you are officially a senior). The purpose of the survey is to gather data that the town can use to understand its planning needs for this important population. The Montclair League of Women Voters has agreed to help the SCAC administer the survey.

The last time the township compiled a list of seniors was 2007, SCAC says is inadequate for planning purposes. As Hurricane Sandy made clear, the lack of contact information for a population potentially at risk during emergencies remains an issue of concern. Continue Reading

Guerrilla Gardening Plant Swap and Giveaway

guerrilla gardening giveawayI have been wanting to grow vegetables ever since I moved to the suburbs five years ago. After a few disappointing tries over the years–a basil plant on my front steps that never really took off, an upside down tomato plant (inspired by this New York Times article) that was devoured by hornworms just as it was beginning to thrive–I’ve decided to give it another try.

UPDATE: Couple’s death determined to be homicide/suicide.

Investigation continued at Canterbury Park in Montclair.

Investigation continued at Canterbury Park in Montclair late this morning near the bench where a man and a woman were found fatally shot last night.

Update 9:15 am: Essex County Prosecutor Anthony Ambrose: “The Montclair Investigation is on going pending the ballistics and Autopsy findings. Presently, we believe there is no threat to community and it is an isolated incident. A weapon was found at the scene.”

While police have not identified the victims, a resident, walking her dog in the park, has said a relative of the male victim posted word of the couple’s tragic death on Facebook.

Update, 10:46am: Montclair mayor Robert Jackson, who was at Canterbury Park last night and again this morning, said it was a surreal and emotional scene with bright lights shining on the crime scene similar to those when a movie is being shot. As family and friends of the victims descended on the park, there was screaming and crying and anger expressed by those who knew the two victims lying near the silver bench near the playground. Jackson was able to meet and give his condolences to the parents of the young woman shot. The male victim lives in Montclair, not far from the park. A resident walking near the scene said he had seen the man recently working out in the park. The Montclair man was known by the nickname “Bop”.

Canterbury ParkUpdate, 11:00am: According to the Office of the County Prosecutor, the victims have been identified as Shanae Q. Howard, 24, of Orange and Brandon Brown, 26, of Montclair. A weapon was found at the scene. Both were pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 10:40 p.m. The two had a dating relationship.

I've heard Baskerville be less than ingenuous but this is not one of those cases. Her letter is heartfelt and compassionate and entirely appropriate. There are many things to abhor about this incident, gangs, guns and violence against a woman among them, but there's also shock, pain and a need to heal.
