Help Transitioning Foster Care Students

shopping cartThe Summer Housing Internship Program (SHIP) is a state-funded summer program that offers an alternative to recipients of the New Jersey Foster Care (NJFC) scholarship who lack the financial, family and social connections to secure safe and stable housing in the summer months.

Ten students between the ages of 18 and 22 are participating in the SHIP program at Montclair State University for 11 weeks this summer. At that age, they are too old for the foster care system–so SHIP provides them the opportunity to receive quality housing and paid internship positions throughout the summer months. SHIP also offers the participants workshops, recreational activities, a speaker series, and a 3 credit course accompanied by an out of state trip for research completion. Each participant is assigned a SHIP Coach who is available to mentor and offer support and guidance through program requirements.

Glazed Donut Sandwich: It’s What’s for Breakfast

BY  |  Friday, Jun 07, 2013 10:30am  |  COMMENTS (17)

glazed donut sandwichTired of your breakfast repertoire and looking for something different? Now is your chance to mix it up a little. Dunkin’ Donuts in Montclair (and Dunkin’ Donuts everywhere) is launching its Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich today. If you love a good McMuffin but find them, well, a little too healthy, the glazed donut sandwich may be right up your alley.

The sandwich is a split glazed donut stuffed with a fried egg and bacon. It packs 360 calories (half of which come from fat), which may seem high, but not when you consider that Quaker Oats granola is 440 calories per cup.

The coffee and donut chain has been testing the sandwich since April in its Massachusetts restaurants and said the response has been favorable, and the web subsequently created some buzz.

While many chains have been focusing on lower calorie and healthier options (egg whites, whole wheat), some seem to take the other extreme–and receive rave reviews from patrons. Taco Bell launched its Doritos Locos Tacos last year and has sold more than 450 million since.

Will the Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich be as popular? Who knows. I, for one, am going to stick to my cold, boring cereal. For now.

It’s Hot

heat waveWe are experiencing our first heatwave of the season, with temperatures expected to reach 90 today. After last weekend’s cold and miserable weather, my first thought is “finally!” but hot weather, of course, does not come without its hazards.

The Montclair Health Department is thus providing a few tips on how to stay safe during excessive heat events: stay cool and hydrated by drinking plenty of water; use air conditioning if you have it–if you don’t have, seek air conditioned buildings during the heat of the day, such as  public libraries and bookstores, movie theaters and malls (if you don’t mind fighting the crowds of others also trying to escape the heat). If you’re a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch customer, it’s a good weekend to check out Museums on Us, when you can get free admission to many museums in the area.

Other suggestions: take a cool bath or shower, minimize direct exposure to the sun and limit your time outdoors. Also, wear loose fitting, light colored clothes and drink lots of water and non-alcoholic drinks (definitely stay away from Holly Korus).

Most important, check on your elderly or ill neighbors, friends and family members, and never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even with the windows rolled down, even for a few minutes. (Hopefully, you already knew that.)

How are you planning on escaping the heat? I am going to stay in my air conditioned home and rock out to Martha and the Vandellas and these other heat wave songs.

Guerrilla Gardening Plant Swap and Giveaway

guerrilla gardening giveawayI have been wanting to grow vegetables ever since I moved to the suburbs five years ago. After a few disappointing tries over the years–a basil plant on my front steps that never really took off, an upside down tomato plant (inspired by this New York Times article) that was devoured by hornworms just as it was beginning to thrive–I’ve decided to give it another try.

Proceeds will go to The Friends of Anderson Park who tirelessly take care of the plantings and the maintenance of the Olmsted-designed park, a favorite spot for walking dogs.

The park was hard hit by Hurricane Sandy, losing many trees, including a few of its very large originals. New plantings went in during the past month and this fundraiser will help raise funds for future plantings and park upkeep.

Half-hour time slots must be reserved in advance. The session fee of $60.00 per dog includes one custom 5×7 color print.

For more information or to reserve your pet portrait session time slot, contact Beth at either: beth@bethburstein.com or www.bethburstein.com

The Place Time Forgot

robertSkinnerNext Friday, Montclair Center will have its 11th annual art walk, A Little Night Art XI, an evening in twenty-six venues. Running from 6pm-9pm, the art walk will feature tours of MAM’s current exhibits and original contemporary art in multiple venues around Montclair.

One such venue is the Art Garage, which will be the exhibitor for “Searching for America,” a series of black and white photographs by Robert Skinner.

“Searching for America” is an ongoing project documenting the somewhat obscure and forgotten part of the landscape and its inhabitants, mainly in the northeastern United States outside of New York City. Skinner’s work focuses on the abandoned resorts and hotels in the Catskill Mountains that are a ghostly reminder of a once thriving vacation and resort region.

THANK GOD! Though I have admit that I really, really liked the bands that Bowery brought in... Let's hope it won't be too pop-centered with LiveNation.
