Montclair Resident Helps Sexual Assault Victims with “Project Unbreakable”

BY  |  Friday, Jun 14, 2013 3:00pm  |  COMMENTS (3)

kaelynOne out of every six American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime–a traumatic event that makes victims of sexual assault more likely to experience depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, and suicidal thoughts.

Montclair resident Kaelyn Siversky understands this all too well. Seven years ago, when she was 15, Siversky was sexually assaulted by a male acquaintance. Like more than half of women who experience sexual assault, Siversky did not report the incident to the police.

“There is still this stigma to sexual assault, where women are blamed for it, ” she says. “The first thing some people asked me when I told them about it was, ‘What were you wearing?’ and ‘Were you drunk?’”

flag in anderson park

A postcard of Anderson Park, circa 1947.

Today is Flag Day, an event that commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes by resolution of the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1977. Lisanne Renner of Friends of Anderson Park sent us this bit of history about the flag and its role in Essex County Parks:

A flag was raised in Anderson Park for the first time in 1912, and it was big enough to put a car dealership to shame: 15 feet by 24 feet. Essex County required flags in all its parks because it wanted to instill in park users – many of them recent immigrants – a sense of national identity and patriotism.
