Monica Paul, Shazmina Khan and Shanae Howard, victims of partner violence.

Monica Paul was fatally shot in June 2008. Shazmina Khan was fatally stabbed in July 2011. Shanae Howard was fatally shot last Thursday.

All three women were killed by someone they had been in a relationship with, and all three murders took place in Montclair.

At least once a day, somewhere a woman is killed by her partner, says Dr. Nichole Simmons, president and senior advocate at S.O.F.I.A., a non profit organization that provides advocacy, supportive services and referrals for temporary housing to “at risk” women and children of domestic violence. “Often it doesn’t make the news. And it’s the only crime that can come masked as love.” Continue Reading

Waiting To See What’s Next For Montclair’s Wellmont Theatre

BY  |  Monday, May 20, 2013 8:45am  |  COMMENTS (20)

Waiting on Montclair's Wellmont Theatre The Wellmont Theatre has been bringing big names in music and comedy to Montclair (and sometimes, big crowds) since opening back in October 2008. The venue has a sold-out show for MGMT on June 20, but what happens after that remains uncertain.

We had heard buzz that the Wellmont may not be booking shows after June 20th’s MGMT concert. A source cited the cost of keeping emergency personnel on staff during the shows as part of the terms of a temporary certificate of occupancy after the theater had ceiling plaster fall during a show, and said vendors had not been requested after June 20.

Baristanet contacted The Bowery Presents with this information, and Katie Schroeder, senior vice president, Rubenstein Communications, Inc, provided this statement:

“The Bowery Presents loves being part of the Montclair community. We have been embraced by our fans, fellow business people and local officials, and have always been good neighbors to the restaurants and stores by offering great shows and concert experiences at The Wellmont Theatre. While we can’t comment on litigation at this time, our current goal is to continue to run The Wellmont as a beloved entertainment venue.”

FINAL-COLLECTING-ART-350-pixelsThe Montclair Art Museum will hold its fourth juried fair, “Collecting Art: An Affordable Art Fair,” on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 in MAM’s Leir Hall.

Local artists will offer their works for prices under $500 to promote affordable collecting of contemporary art. Admission is free and MAM will offer half price admission to the Museum’s galleries on those days.

This year, a panel including Ilana Stollman, manager of retail and rental operations at MAM, and Scott Gordley, professor of fine arts at Montclair State University, reviewed over 100 applications. The artists represent a diverse group in both style and geography. From Maplewood resident Laura Gilkey’s abstract, otherworldly clay and felt sculptures to Pauline Chernichaw’s gritty, colorful photographs, to Rita Flores’ multimedia portraits, the works featured in Collecting Art will offer something to meet every aesthetic. The exhibiting artists–including Alexa Garbarino, Dana DiMuro and Joseph Haag from Montclair–are from towns across New Jersey, as well as New York and Massachusetts. Continue Reading

“You’ll be missed.”

That is the heartbreaking message on balloons at a tribute memorial at Canterbury Park in Montclair, in the spot where Shanae Howard and Brandon Brown were found, both fatally shot, in what has been determined to be a murder/suicide. The candles still flickered late this afternoon; a police car was stationed nearby in the park.

A Fourth Ward Collaborative meeting, already scheduled for this coming Tuesday, May 21st, will now focus on the tragic incident, says councilor Renee Baskerville, in an email to Fourth Ward residents. Baskerville writes…

I really really hope Wellmont stays. I've seen over 40 shows here (no joke) and most of them were great. Along with the Montclair Film Festival, we need the Wellmont here to keep Montclair as relevant as ever.
