Dogs of Anderson ParkThe Dogs of Anderson Park with Pet Photographer Beth Burstein, now in its second year, will take place Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, from 9 a.m. to noon. Proceeds will go to The Friends of Anderson Park who tirelessly take care of the plantings and the maintenance of the Olmsted-designed park, a favorite spot for walking dogs.

The park was hard hit by Hurricane Sandy, losing many trees, including a few of its very large originals. New plantings went in during the past month and this fundraiser will help raise funds for future plantings and park upkeep.

Half-hour time slots must be reserved in advance. The session fee of $60.00 per dog includes one custom 5×7 color print.

For more information or to reserve your pet portrait session time slot, contact Beth at either: beth@bethburstein.com or www.bethburstein.com

Tick Tock DinerGeorgios Spyropoulos, the manager of the Tick Tock diner in Clifton, who was arrested earlier this week for plotting to have the eatery’s owner tortured, robbed and killed, has also been accused of harassment by some of his staff.

According to an article in the Star-Ledger yesterday, Spyropoulos told one waitress she “would never see the light of day” if she talked about the alleged sexual harassment that went on for nearly a decade at the diner.

He grabbed another waitress’ hand and placed it on her genitals, later telling her he would “spend all his money to make sure she is buried alive” if she told police about the incident.

Nia Gill Nails Endorsement from Essex Chapter of Democracy for America

BY  |  Thursday, Apr 11, 2013 12:20pm  |  COMMENTS (5)

DFA - Nia Gill Endorsement april 2013The Essex County chapter of Democracy for America (DFA) has announced their official endorsement of State Senator Nia Gill, the incumbent running against challenger Mark Alexander in the primary for the state’s 34th legislative district. DFA is a leading national grassroots organization dedicated to advancing progressive candidates and causes.

Katherine Joyce, a leader of the Essex County chapter of Democracy for America, said, “Essex County DFA is proud to endorse State Senator Nia Gill. Through the ten years of our group’s history, we have had numerous occasions to work with her office on issues of great concern, beginning with the effort to reform New Jersey’s voting laws that help ensure every person’s vote is properly counted — a cause she has championed. Senator Gill is a proven leader and strong advocate for progressive causes in the State Senate. Whether it is the fight to ensure all children have access to a quality public education or demanding equality for all New Jerseyans by twice sponsoring New Jersey’s Marriage Equality Act, Senator Gill stands with progressives throughout the state. Especially in the current political climate, it is important that we have a Senator who has long championed progressive causes in the 34th Legislative District and knows how to get things done.

Senator Gill acknowledged the endorsement by noting, “Being a progressive Democrat means taking action when others won’t. Fighting for progress requires standing up for people who can’t. Today, as always, I stand with the progressive community not simply as a Senator but as a lifelong activist and partner in the fight for social justice, women’s rights, access to voting, marriage equality, increased funding for our schools, and the future of this community.”

Montclair Art Museum The New Spirit

Jonas Lie: The Black Teapot

This weekend, the Montclair Art Museum went back to modernity with its exciting exhibition, The New Spirit: American Art in the Armory Show, 1913. Celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the original Armory Show, this tribute to The International Exhibition of Modern Art immerses visitors in the artistic mores surrounding the planning and building of our own Montclair Art Museum, which will celebrate its centennial next year. Showing through June 16th, 2013, The New Spirit is stunning and colorful, and it feels every bit as modern as it was during its three-week stay in Manhattan during the last century.

As co-curators, Gail Stavitsky, MAM’s chief curator, and guest curator Laurette McCarthy have re-created the Armory Show’s original atmosphere with yellow canopies, burlap-covered walls, and greenery framing the entire exhibition. These environmental efforts are appreciated and effective, but they can’t compete with the vibrant artwork on display.

I really really hope Wellmont stays. I've seen over 40 shows here (no joke) and most of them were great. Along with the Montclair Film Festival, we need the Wellmont here to keep Montclair as relevant as ever.
