Roxy Needs a Forever Home

BY  |  Monday, Feb 20, 2012 12:28pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

A reader from Bloomfield writes that she can no longer keep a dog she is fostering. Here is Roxy’s story:

I’ve known Roxy for several years, but I have had her since October 2011, when her family surrendered her to me. The elderly owner was hospitalized and the adult children knew I cared for Roxy when their dad needed help over the years. They were just letting her out to run the neighborhood but didn’t want to let her back in. The neighbors alerted me to this and the family asked me to take her because they could no longer tend to her.

Roxy is around six years old and weighs 55 pounds. She is up-to-date on all shots and has been spayed and microchipped. She is housebroken and responds to with basic commands (sit, stay and come).

Roxy loves to cuddle and sit at your side, whether you are doing yard work, washing dishes, driving, or sitting on the couch. When you are ready to get out and about, Roxy will keep up with you and she loves to trot along as you jog through the park.

Roxy has a high prey drive and will be on alert for cats and other small animals. She hasn’t shown signs of aggression but I haven’t given her the opportunity to show me to what extent she’ll go. She does well with other dogs while walking throught the park or neighborhood, but she does NOT like my other two dogs. I keep her separated, because both of my dogs will not tolerate her being possessive of me and I don’t want to create any unnecessary anxiety in her. I have not had extra time to work with Roxy in the way I would like, given my current commitments. Roxy has been extremely accommodating and responsive to any boundaries I have set forth in the household.

Sarah Keyishian of SleepyDog Training is offering complementary initial training to help integrate Roxy into a new family, if desired.

Please contact pets@baristanet.com if you are interested in adopting Roxy.

Why Has Josephine Banda Been Banned from the Bukowski Animal Shelter?

BY  |  Friday, Feb 10, 2012 10:31am  |  COMMENTS (45)

One of the highlights of Josephine Banda’s day was accompanying her daughter, Karen, to the John A. Bukowski Animal Shelter in Bloomfield, where Karen has been a volunteer for about 15 years. Josephine, 87, would keep her daughter company while performing light tasks such as folding laundry and greeting potential adopters. She also took great pleasure in watching cats at play in the shelter.

Both longtime Bloomfield residents and lifelong animal lovers, the women were welcome fixtures at the shelter, until one day last month when Karen Banda received an email from Karen Lore, acting director of Health & Human Services at Township of Bloomfield Department of Health & Human Services. In it, Lore stated that Josephine Banda would no longer be allowed to volunteer at the shelter because she was considered a “liability.” The email, however, did not explain what was meant by “liability.”

Pet Medium to Present Messages, Readings in Montclair on February 10

BY  |  Thursday, Feb 09, 2012 10:30am  |  COMMENTS (16)

Lee Ann LaRocca

Pet psychic, medium, and healer Lee Ann LaRocca will present an evening of messages and readings of pets who are living or those who have crossed over, on Friday, February 10, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Montclair Metaphysical & Healing Center. The cost is $25 and preregistration is required by Thursday, February 9, by 6 pm.

She will be assisted by South African medium, Lee Van Zyl, and asks that attendees bring photos of their pets.

A self-described animal communicator since she was a child, LaRocca believes that animals are highly telepathic and that humans can learn to tune into their messages. “They can convey to us when they’re ill, what their likes and dislikes are,” she said. “They have diverse personalities, like us.”

LaRocca has also conducted many sessions where she’s been able to contact pets that have passed. “Most of the time, their spirits just stop in to say ‘hi,’ or to tell their owners that they are doing fine and are happy.”

She said that deceased pets can also appear to us in dreams. “It’s the easiest way for them to come visit us.”

Reduced Adoption Fees for Valentine’s Day … and More

BY  |  Monday, Jan 30, 2012 2:00pm  |  COMMENTS (1)

Montclair Animal Shelter is offering an early Valentine’s Day gift for those looking for love: reduced adoption fees for one day only, on Saturday, February 4.

MTAS is once again partnering with Montclair Feed & Pet Supply to celebrate Valentine’s Day with reduced adoption fees on all dogs and cats during the in-store event. A number of the shelter’s adoptable pets will be on site at 191 Glenridge Avenue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with dog adoption fees reduced to $70 and cat fees to $50. The fee reductions will also apply to all adoptable pets at the shelter. The shelter will also open an hour earlier for the event on February 4, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

MTAS began on-site adoption events at Montclair Feed & Pet Supply at the beginning of 2012. On the first Saturday and last Sunday of each month, volunteers transport a number of the shelter’s adoptable pets to the store for display from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The shelter provides animal care, control, and pet adoption services to the townships of Montclair, Nutley, and Verona. Its regular hours are Tuesdays from 2 to 6 p.m.; and Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Off-hour and off-day visits are available by appointment. Montclair Feed & Pet Supply is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Do Runners Use Streets and Not Sidewalks?

BY  |  Thursday, Jan 26, 2012 9:15am  |  COMMENTS (77)

As a runner, one of the questions I get asked frequently is, “Why do runners run in the road and not on the sidewalks?”

Baristanet recently received such a query from a recent transplant to Montclair. He wrote:

Why don’t people use sidewalks in some parts of Montclair? On a typical day, I will see a few dog walkers, perambulators, and joggers cruising down Midland Avenue. None of them will be using the sidewalk.

This doesn’t bug me all that much when it’s one person. But tonight, there was the six o’clock jog. This is a somewhat odd phenomenon where about two dozen people are jogging, running, or walking north on Midland Avenue, spread out over about over a quarter mile. Many, but not all, are wearing blinking LEDs, reflective vests, and the like, but they’re ALL in the street, not on the sidewalk. Sometimes the joggers are three and four abreast, taking up almost half of the width of the avenue.

Consequently, I have to drive down the middle of the street, and then edge between oncoming (northbound) traffic and the danger-loving runners. I am seriously concerned that someone will hit one of these people. I’m even more concerned that it might be me!

Rabies Clinics Set for February

BY  |  Friday, Jan 13, 2012 11:46am  |  COMMENTS (0)

The Winter Rabies Clinics for Cats and Dogs have been scheduled for the following dates:

Montclair Rabies Clinic
Monday, February 6
Dogs: 6:00 – 6:45 p.m.
Cats: 6:45 – 7:30 p.m.
Edgemont Shelter
292 Valley Road

Cedar Grove/Verona Rabies Clinic
Wednesday, February 15
Dogs: 6:00 – 6:45 p.m.
Cats: 6:45 – 7:30 p.m.
Cedar Grove Fire Department
525 Pompton Avenue

Dogs and cats should not be fed for six hours prior to the rabies vaccination. Each dog and cat must be on a leash or in a carrier and accompanied by an adult.

Rabies is spread by infected saliva that enters the body through a bite or broken skin. The virus travels from the wound to the brain, where it causes swelling or inflammation. Although dog bites are a common cause of rabies in developing countries, there have been no reports of rabies caused by dog bites in the United States for a number of years due to widespread animal vaccination.

Realtor Collects 800 Pounds of Food for Four-Legged Victims of Foreclosures

BY  |  Friday, Jan 06, 2012 11:18am  |  COMMENTS (6)

New Jersey has the 14th highest foreclosure rates in the country. Human beings, however, are not the only ones being affected by the foreclosure crisis–household pets are feeling the pain as well.

Realtor Nick Baldwin of The Baldwin Dream Team at Keller Williams NJ Metro Group in Montclair, felt something needed to be done. “Pets are often left behind, malnourished, and neglected because their owners can’t afford to pay their mortgage, let alone feed Fido,” he said. “That’s when I thought, ‘I’m a Realtor. Why not collect food for the pets of foreclosure?’”

And the idea for the Four-Legged Food Drive: Feeding Foreclosed Pets was born. Continue Reading

A reader from Montclair writes that her family cat is missing: A female, mostly grey, Tabby with muted Calico coloring (some browns), a white belly and chest with white paws. Her name is Soxy and she has been missing for three days from Franklin Place, between Washington Street and Lincoln Place in the South End.

If you’ve seen Soxy, please contact pets@baristanet.com.

I would love to see Santorum get the nod. Maybe then the politically comatose members of society will wake up.
