Valentine’s Day in Baristaville

BY  |  Sunday, Feb 12, 2012 9:30am  |  COMMENTS (0)

How do you say ” I love You” on Valentine’s Day? It is the one day of the year when the verbal expression just will not do. Most of us buy a gift that will say it for us. The traditional bouquet of red roses needs no accompaning words. On Friday, I stopped at some Baristaville retailers to see what they had to offer and I found a wide range of choices from romantic to sexy to silly. You don’t have to travel far to find the right words to say on Tuesday. You can shop local!

See what you absorb when you walk/drive around Baristaville. Watch the slide show and you’ll see a hint, a bigger hint, and finally the answer. See if you can guess the town/place on the first shot (some are pretty easy — others a little more obscure):

Window Wonderland!

BY  |  Saturday, Dec 17, 2011 9:34am  |  COMMENTS (4)

We had fun tromping around for store to store in Santa hats, nibbling at cookies and sipping hot cocoa, cider and glogg, and meeting all the wonderful shopkeepers who put so much creativity into their holiday windows. And though we missed the Santa-saurus, we heard it was the hit of Church Street, and our friend Matt Frankel sent us a video.

You still have time to vote for your favorites — and win some great prizes just for telling us who you voted for and why! See a slideshow after the jump.

‘Tis the season to shop local! Now is the time to enjoy leisurely, seasonal shopping at the independent retailers and family businesses in Baristaville. Yesterday, I visited Monclair Center where the holiday spirit meets the personal touch. More than a dozen retailers were getting their windows spiffed up for Window Wonderland, the Center’s holiday display window contest sponsored by Baristanet. Voting begins this week on our site, and next Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m., stores will lay out treats, and music and a baby T-Rex will be on hand to celebrate the downtown shopping district.

Bob Russo

After lots of speculation, former Montclair mayor Bob Russo announced that he will not run for Mayor after all on Saturday afternoon.  A council seat is  a possibility, however.  The friends of Bob Russo gathered  at Tierney’s Tavern, Montclair for the annual Robert F. Kennedy remembrance celebration.  Russo, Mayor of Montclair from 2000-2004,, was scheduled to announce his intentions for the May 2012 election.  He said that he will not try for Mayor again, but left the door open for a run at the councilperson-at-large position in 2012. What to do with all those free frozen turkeys? Food prices are so high these days and it is easy to earn rewards in more than one store. I am due a bird at both Shoprite and Stop & Shop but I make Yankee Pot Roast for Thanksgiving Day. If you are like me and don’t want to redeem your coupon for yourself, please consider donating the turkeys to the Community Food Bank. On Saturday, November 19, The Glen Ridge Rotary Club’s annual collection drive takes place at the Ridgewood Avenue Train Station, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Turkeys must be frozen.

Montclair’s Human Needs Food Pantry is also in need of turkeys.
